I would imagine the idea is runs on the board and have the benefit of the kiwis batting last, both best bet for a test win as if it does become shortened by weather then a good first innings total is needed.
 
Get through the new ball/first hour, then for this NZ bowling line up, its gonna be a long hard day...

Edit: Although I am not exactly a cricket fan, I am always keent o know how England are getting on so I will be in and out of here anyway. Plus, I used to play a bit of cricket in my younger days <ok>
 
Seen out the first hour, another 5-10 overs and the ball won't be doing anything, can start piling up the runs after that...

It's about building a bloody innings, foundations for the match. If it's a slow start then there is lot's of beer and Pimms on offer at Lords to keep one occupied.
