In an interview with the Portadown Times this week, the group hit back at the criticism levelled against them in recent months and said they would continue to hold protests in the town on a weekly basis. They also warned against the removal of any of the flags, saying that any flag that is taken down will be “replaced by two more”. They also claimed that the removal of flags would see “every kerbstone” being painted red, white and blue. “There are plenty more flags to go up,” said a spokesman. “Every road coming into Portadown, every arterial route, will have flags on it.” The group are also furious at criticism of them in last week’s Portadown Times letters page, when they were labelled “tribal terrorists” by one reader. “Being labelled terrorists is something we are not happy about at all,” said a group spokesman. “We are just the everyday people of Portadown and we are disgusted at being labelled in this way. That description has annoyed plenty of people in the town. We have no paramilitary connections, we are just ordinary people who are worried about our British culture being taken away. About 95 per cent of people involved in the protests are in full-time employment.” The spokesman highlighted how the people paid for the flags “out of our own pockets”. In Kernan, where the recent erection of flags caused controversy, the group again said that residents from the area funded the purchase of flags that are now flying from lampposts. The group have held protests every single week in the town since the pre-Christmas controversy over Belfast City Council’s decision to remove the Union flag from City Hall. They point out that just one of those protests resulted in violence, which they claim resulted from police “heavy-handedness”. “Around 50 of us have been taking part in the protests on a weekly basis. People from basically every community in the town have been taking part, we all feel very strongly about this issue. It’s not just about the flag, it’s about every single part of our culture being stripped away,” the spokesman added. “We feel we have not been fairly represented. Nothing is said about the flags flown on the Garvaghy Road over Easter and when republicans held street parties to celebrate the death of Margaret Thatcher, the police were nowhere to be seen.” The group also stressed that criticism of damaged flags flying was unwarranted. “If there is a ripped or torn flag they will be replaced as soon as possible, and, as we said, the new flags will be paid out of our own pockets,” they added. “It’s important to note that the police haven’t attempted to stop us putting the flags up. We do it in daylight and no-one disguises their faces.” The group are also organising a cultural heritage parade in Portadown on Wednesday, May 15.
Money out your own pocket to pay for some flags. If only those were the generation to "fail" Ulster we might get some progress.
