Apparently, we asked Man City to pay £27m for Agger last summer...<yikes>

Its in the Mancini article on the BBCwebsite.

Note to the 'apparently' <laugh>

He's worth that much to us... but not to anyone else <yikes>

Imagine a summer of maybe three or four quality additions... I'd love

Eriksen
Alderweireld
Diame
...then another attacker... Gameiro maybe?

I think that's a little dream-world-esque <laugh>

If we can't get Alonso why not his younger model....

T
he real gem, and the one that Marca bizarrely failed to mention, is Asier Illarramendi. Permit me to take a deep breath, because in ten years of writing this column I've tried very hard to not make over-the-top statements (they tend to come back and haunt you, down the line), but if there is something approaching an Alonso clone, or to push the envelope further, a potentially better player still, then this is the guy. I've been watching Sociedad for over 20 years now, and Illarramendi ('Pea mountain' in Basque) is the best thing I've seen since Alonso. The whispers are that Barcelona have already made their move, because they see him as a better Xavi-clone than Thiago. Xavi or Xabi? Only time (and euros) will tell.

There are parallels. Like Alonso, Illarramendi is quiet and discreet, and was slightly tubby in his youth. In footballing terms, he has started at the opposite end of the central midfielder's continuum to Alonso, in that his basic instincts are defensive and his ball-distribution is what you notice next. With Alonso, as with Pardo, it was the other way around. But Illarramendi, still only 23, perfectly epitomises the second most wonderful quote from Spanish football, from Jorge Valdano. "Hay jugadores quien, si les dejas en un bosque sin brujula, siempre saldrán. La mayoria se perderá". (There are players who, if you leave them in a forest without a compass, they'll always find their way out. Most players will get lost.) It's the perfect description of the good central midfielder. If you play on the wing, there is always time and space, and one guy to worry about. But the central midfielder is always surrounded by trees. He has to constantly find space, he has to find a way out. Only a certain type of player fits this mould, and he rarely needs pace, or even a great physique. They can be tubby but mightily effective. Think of Jan Molby in his later years.

I've just spoken to my reporter mate. As it stands, Suarez has no intention of leaving Liverpool in the summer. However, if someone comes in with a large bag of money, CL football and a commitment to mould the team around him, then who knows. Nothing new there then. Coates is going. He's not sure about Skrtel.

Erikson is deffo a key target. He doesn't know about Toby what's his face, but that Swansea CB is deffo on the shopping list.

I think Williams is the big 'built like a brick s***house' that MITO is after. I would be happy with Alder and Williams as they would improve the defence (at least in terms of depth) in different ways - i.e. ball playing defender, and one physically dominant player who is already used to the Rodgers style.

Glad to hear that Eriksen is a key target - a truly gifted footballer and is only 21 years old.

The agent of Real Betis playmaker Benat Etxebarria has suggested his client will leave the club this summer to further his int'l hopes.

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, 25, has revealed he could leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season.
Would be awesome if we got these two. AM and Striiker. Higuian is still only 25?

Although I understand the link, I'm not sure that's entirely MITO's view <laugh> Hyypia was never a 'brick ****house' but he was able to dominate the air, does Williams do this? He's got to be better at it than Agger but maybe not Skrtel, but he is a better all round player than Skrtel IMO.

Really don't think we have the money this summer for more than one 'big' name. Looks like Eriksen is a target, but honestly I don't see that one happening if any of the European heavyweights take a look at him...or pay him enough.

Huguain will probably be bid on by City or Chavski, they buy everyone else, why not him too? Besides, I think we have higher value positions to worry about filling first.

Good to hear but didn't your reporter mate say we were nailed on the land Ince too? Not questioning his knowledge / info (keep it coming) but just pointing out that nothing is 100% until the doted line is signed whilst the fat lady sings <ok>

If he's better, it's only by a small margin. Is it really worth the 12-15mill Swansea will ask for for such a small improvement? I really hope we look abroad. We could tempt Dede for that much who's a damn sight better than Williams! There's a whole host of players in the dutch or belgium leagues too on the cheap. Williams is good - we can do better and can do so for cheaper.

I'm not saying we should get Williams, I agree with most on here that we should be looking for younger and better, both in quality and value. However, I think he is better than Skrtel but then, I'm biased because I really don't rate Skrtel <laugh>

I agree on Dede and would love to see us bag him this summer but I feel we would have to buy someone else of a similar elk considering the way South American's settle in England after a direct move.
