Reaney and Cooper were Leeds regular full-backs with Madeley being more of a utility player (he featured in all 10 positions, except goalkeeper!).

    Bremner was the defensive midfielder.

Terry Cooper was doing some scouting work for Harry last season. He is/was living in Spain and was looking at players over there for us.

It was Cooper whose fine form kept our Cyril Knowles out of the England side.

Wow, memory lane! Not only do I recognise that Esso promotion I've actually got one somewhere in the loft. Certainly doesn't have all the badges though! I also had the world cup squad medals. The 1970 squad I remember were much lighter, the later ones much heavier and more substantial. I certainly remember all those promotions when you got one coin whenever you (well your Dad) filled up. Although there was this day when I was walking past a tiny petrol station (of the kind you never find these days in suburban areas) after the World Cup 1970 and some guy from the kiosk called out to me something to the effect of 'hey kid, do you want these...' And he proceeded to give me all of his 1970 coins that he hadn't given out during the promotion... I ended up with about 2 or 3 hundred! I can't remember what happened to them sadly.

I had a Saturday / School holiday job at our local Esso station so I amassed a huge collection of these promotional items which motorists didn't want.

I made a small fortune at school selling them on to just about every kid.

And I also won an Esso competition to name a British team for the 1974 World Cup Finals in West Germany - sadly it wasn't the first prize (opting for Rodney Marsh over Kenny Dalglish cost me an all-expenses trip to the Finals) but the second prize of a two week adventure holiday in the Lake District for me and a chum.

    Happy days!

  8. My family was too poor to afford a car, so the only way that I could acquire these bits of meaningless, fit-for-the-dustbin plastic was cast-offs from richer pals.

    Oh, happy days!

I can't see the friggin' things properly. Is the picture deliberately small, Smart?

    Is Cardiff next to Celtic?

    And Hearts below Celtic?

    Preston is next to Portsmouth.

Middlesbrough is right of Utd, then Millwall, Newcastle, Northampton, Norwich, Forest, Oldham?

Oh cheers, Smart. So the only ones with a chance were the computer boffins with 50" screens or those who knew how to enlarge the image without making it go fuzzy! <doh>

Does anyone remember the little fact books I think they were called Squelchers?
I think that was an Esso promotion too.
Those little coins for the world cup I used to nag my dad to buy petrol all the time even when he didn't need to.

As a kid (7 or 8ish) I was into the Pannini stickers. For that reason, the dodgy haircuts and beards of Gerry Gow, Dave Needham and the like have stayed ingrained in my mind.

I don't remember the Esso collection. Just the tiger. Pack den tiger in den tank (in German).

Got them stashed away as well as the coins and busts. They also produced busts of kings and queens which I have as well.

If we all stop and think about it...were all bloody crazy! All that dollar lolly we've spent on Spurs and football items.
I always read of stories about wives and mothers throwing out valuable (now) soccer items, stamps, matchbox tops and Lord knows what else,it almost, almost, makes me cry!

I always kept my junk in old suitcases, thankfully, and still have my "stuff" to this day.......including Charles Buchan's Football Monthlies,Soccer Stars,Sport,Sport Express, some Jimmy Hill's and a ton of Spurs cuttings, sadly going discoloured now, plus hundreds of programmes!
