Rooney, Gerrard, Hart.

But that's the thing, Gerrard is a shadow of his former self, do you remember his contribution against Saints a few weeks ago... He gave the ball away continuously in the first half against Montenegro but as he is captain he is picked. We needed a holding midfielder and instead of bringing on Parker we introduced Ashley Young :s.

Forget this have pace be strong stuff ancient . I would prefer football smarts creativity, flare, vision look at the way the game has changed. In saying this wingers should have pace.

Watched a academy game recently and all I could hear was tackle him go for it.Not Saints I must say awful advise next to me was Liverpool legend and he was shaking his head.

Huge fan of Gerrard, but he is a shadow of what he was. Worrying if there isn't an England player capable of displacing him soon. As for Beckham, he is a great role model for young footballers....didn't just sit on his talent and coast, he worked hard to improve and to remain fit.

Becks showed he's still got it tonight, i've never seen a player with such and accurate and diverse range of passing. Absolute hero.

You must have missed out on the Steve Williams, David Armstrong era

Indeed, also missed out on the Le Tissier era. He may have been more known for his shooting, but he was the all-round phenomenon. His passing was varied and almost always inch-perfect. If he got any wrong it was usually the twerp on the receiving end who wasn't up to the task of receiving it. 60yards to the stride or just a side foot, it was all the same to him.

You all must have missed out on the Terry Paine era then. Possibly the best long passer the game has ever seen.

Rooney is still a nailed on starter.

Hmmm. There have been (several) times when his attitude clearly showed that he couldn't give a damn about England.

As for Beckham, should have been and should still be in every squad for me. We are way too average to do without a passer of his quality.

You know full well what it was. It's what we used to buy sweets with..! :)

This picture is bigger than actual size.

Thats huge. Paine could drop it on a farthing! Now when did they stop? Before my time, but I do remember many of the sweets were 4 for a penny.

Paine was unlucky, hitting his peak just when Ramsey stopped using wingers. Mind you he adapted to the right midfielder role very much like Beckham really. And he was known to get a bit passionate as well. Not forgetting the Elvis haircut.

All agreed, except that a farthing was bigger..! :)

EDIT: OK, I think it may have been the same size, but copper-nickel instead of nickel-silver. Was 24 times smaller in value though..!

He's the first name on the team sheet being captain though (unless rested for pointless games such as San Marino) .England have always been like that.
