How are you getting 10% a year? Investing? £65k a year would be a significant upgrade, i could buy trinkets!
10% a year used to be the standard pre-tax interest rate a bank would offer if you had at least a million in cash. All I want to know is what cash sum I would need for someone to guarantee me at least 30K post-tax in perpetuity. 80% of my wad is invested. When the market is good, I can do things like take 50K tax-free ( "life" policy + "chargeable gains" ) and use that as a deposit on a house (which I did) . When things are like now (you expect the usual economic cycle to be 10 yrs) , then the wad is worth less than its purchase value.
If I could get 30K pa on 250K in perpetuity, I'd retire yesterday. Well, not work for the sake of money. As for Joe, does he not consider that a 30m cash injection for NEW STRIKER etc might move Spurs much quicker down the line than things are currently proceeding. We have to assume ENIC think the answer is no.
I think that Joe Lewis just sees Spurs as Levy's thing. He's probably been promised a substantial payout and just lets him get on with it, as long as the books balance. There are better owners out there, but we've seen first hand what substantially worse ones can do to a club in a very short period of time. I'm pretty happy with the way that we're going about things at the moment, despite the need to address certain aspects of the squad, to be honest. Maybe it's just because of some of the **** that we've had to put up with in the past, though that's still relative.
"I think that Joe Lewis just sees Spurs as Levy's thing. He's probably been promised a substantial payout and just lets him get on with it, as long as the books balance." And doesn't have to dip into his own pocket to help (IMHO) . And would also fit in with why ENIC got involved in the first place (Levy seeing a chance to help the club he supports, being able to sell the story to Joe on ENIC getting involved in the first place on purely commercial considerations etc) . I have to say, that apart from the "window of opportunity" stuff (which I still think is a valid/serious concern) , this debate has made me feel quite a bit less 'WTF ENIC !!??' when NEW STRIKER etc does not appear.
I think it is simpler than that - you've got to find a £30m striker that is actually worth £30m and that is the hard bit. That means you have to trust your football staff to choose the right one. I wouldn't trust Redknapp to spend £30m on a player. I probably would trust AVB. If Lewis and Levy think like me then we might actually sign someone like this. Let's just hope we get someone better than Defoe when we do!
I wonder how many clubs are looking at Southampton's Lambert? Us too,I wonder? That lad's had to work himself up.Maybe that's why he appears to play with "fire in his belly!"
