    Brian McDermott departs Reading

Finally came ... perhaps still in the job so long out of loyalty by the Russian president ... but was it too late to save the Royals? What's your opinion on a change of manager at the taoil end of the season?

    Quotes/Opinions from the Media:

    Inside Football
It remains to be seen who Reading will bring in, but the new manager will have precious little time to guide the Royals to safety

    Irish Examiner
He guided Reading back to the top flight last season for only the second time in their history but has been relieved of his duties as the club look to turn around their form in time to secure Premier League survival.

    San Francisco Chronicle
McDermott had been in charge since 2009 and took Reading back into the Premier League. Reading says "in our current situation, owner Anton Zingarevich felt that a change was necessary."

    Daily Express
The managerial merry-go round had already already seen casualties this season in the Premier League with Mark Hughes, Roberto Di Matteo and Nigel Adkins being given the chop. And McDermott, who for some have felt the writing has been on the wall for him, was given his P45 after a poor sequence of results.

    Reading Evening Post
Brian McDermott has been sacked by Reading FC with Alan Curbishley the bookmakers' favourite to replace him.

    Joe.ie
The powers that be at Reading have decided that they need a new man to help them beat the drop after parting company with Brian McDermott today. McDermott wasn’t known to be in danger of losing his job with the Royals, but speculation about his future at the club began to increase earlier today when the odds of him losing his job plummeted and betting was eventually suspended as his fate became clear.

    The Independent
The decision, with just nine games of the season remaining, will come as a surprise. Despite Reading's difficulty on the pitch following their return to the Premier League there has been a well publicised good team-spirit at the club. And with so few games of the season remaining, any incoming manager will struggle to make a swift enough impact.

    -------------------

I think Zingarevich has been extraordinarily patient, he's been a 'fan' himself long before taking ever, ever since schooldays in fact. On forums, many Royals were talking about this openly late November/December. But has the loyalty been too strong?; I believe there's too little time now, but hope I'm proved wrong. McDermott has been a fantastic servent to the club, not only as manager but in previous roles spanning more than a decade. So pretty sad too ...

You want to come on our board and discuss as we have quite a few posts on it.
Think you were wrong to get rid even if results and tactics have been bad.

I think it was the right decision but the timing is very strange.

Unfortunately Ellers, due to my location, my active supporting days are far behind me, but I'm an avid follower from a distance.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise to most of us. The performances, tactics, team selection and McDermotts general demeanour have been under scrutiny for a very long time. There has been a poll on RR for weeks now about who should replace him.

But he should either have been sacked before the January window or given the chance to see the season out in my view. Whether him, or another manager, our fate is pretty well decided, so it wouldnt have made any difference if he stayed until May.

Agree if you are going to 'get rid' it needed to be Jan like what we did with that muppet Hughes.

Agree, if you go down he is the perfect guy to bouce back.

I think it's a little harsh myself, I never really understand why newly promoted teams sack there managers so freely.

Your in the position you're in because your team are the weakest in the division, not because of your manager. It's hardly like your chairman has given him any significant money to spend, so what does he expect?

As it happens I think this sacking has made matters worse for you guys, as when you likely go down, McDermott would have been the ideal manager to get you back up.

Im sure there will be a fair few championship clubs interested in appointing McDermott, after all his record in that league is very good having made the play off final in his first season, and then winning it in his 2nd

Ludicrous decision. Reading haven't really offered him the support financially. Well, apart from the pay-off I expect he will receive. The decision is somewhat understandable, but really harsh given the timing.

The timing is terrible. A new manager has almost no chance of saving us now. Should have gone at Christmas or at the end of this season.
