Finding a place for Wes?

With the result on Sat still fresh,and the resulting euphoria surrounding Kamara,
and the two striker formation,one serious question.

Where do we find a place for Wes??

The only position he looks comfortable is playing off the striker/strikers.
To play the guy left side is a complete waste of his talent.

Any ideas:huh::huh:
 
No place for him in a 4-4-2.
Worried that a diamond is too fragile in the prem.
Leaves Wes on the bench as an impact sub.
 
While it may be hard to fit him into a 4-4-2 it is very likely that we will still line up 4-5-1 away from home in which case you would want him starting off the striker. No way should we sell him. He is worth more to us than clubs would be willing to pay.

Only if that formation works - if it doesn't work, as has been the case for a good chunk of this season then he becomes a kind of luxury player which is why I would go more 4-3-1-2 and give him a free role and see how it works out, not at Man Utd but a home game (maybe Villa or Reading) just to see if it can work out.

I agree to an extent but I really dont think any club would be willing to pay that much for him at all. Maybe 2 million? Is it really worth selling him for that? As I said I still think he has a lot to offer. At least though we can now mix the formations up a bit and be less predictable with the additional personnel that have come in.
 
Purchase a defensive midfielder who is quick can tackle but can pass superbly and we can play diamond but where would that leave Johnson and Tettey?

4-4-2 at home and 4-5-1 away for me depending on the opposition too.

It is debatable I agree but if he was to become a "non-starter" for the majority because the "winning formula" does not accommodate him most of the time, would we be not as well cutting our losses and using the money toward another player that does fit in to the whatever is perceived to be the best system?

The ideal scenario is to find the "winning formula" with him being one of the first names on the team sheet so CH needs to be brave (once we are safe) to try something a little different and use the last 2-3 games (hopefully) experimenting with formation a little.

I like Wes as I do all our players but for the overall good I would rather we didn't carry a passenger because of sentiment.
 
Wes, while being influential in some games, is not effective in numerous others. on Saturday, the Everton players just brushed him aside with ease whenever he got on the ball as he is just too lightweight and not very fast. sorry all you Wes lovers but he is not the force that he has been and can only command a certain starting place through sentimentality. in home games it would seem he is best suited to starting on the bench though in away games he will probably start.
 
So there is a possibility that we might be lining up for the next few games in a different formation that doesn't suit Wes, meaning he might have to settle for a place on the bench and so obviously the best thing to do is sell him <doh>

I think we have an early contender for the most ridiculous suggestion of the week <ok>

I think Thai was saying if the new formation proved successful, therefore permanent, then Wes would become an unused luxury! No need for carrabuh's favourite smiley! <ok>
 
Sorry Dave, but the idea that just because Wes may not be a regular starter means he is of no use to us at all and we should sell him is completely bonkers and I feel perfectly entitled to treat such a suggestion with the disdain I feel it deserves <ok>
 
His position will always be in the middle, behind the striker. We will need that role this season and going forward. Wes has proved himself to be useful time and time again and I don't think we need to worry too much. Players go in and out of rotation all the time doesn't mean they are surplus to requirement.

I have to agree with Tony, what a ridiculous suggetion and when norwich went on the 10 game unbeaten run who was in the team???

I agree he is wasted on the left but play a 4 3 1 2 formation and it will work some games and fail at others but thats why we have a squad of players and why the manager must pick and choose which games suit which formation and i believe next season we will see this a lot more.

The squad comes in to play when you look at how well Howson played saturday.

I do not see how that is bonkers at all. If we signed AN Other for £XXX million, with £XXXXX a week salary, and did not fit in to the way we were playing (effectively) would it be sensible to keep him until his contract expired if someone was to take him off our hands? Of course if those XXXXX's are higher it then becomes even more ridiculous to keep them but the principle remains. If a formula is found where points are collected on a regular basis and Wes cannot be accommodated then please explain to sense in keeping him if he could be replaced by another player that could fit it to the system.
 
But that is all surely conjecture? From what I've read, you've apparently made your judgement about him being of no value to us any more and him becoming no more than a passenger is based on the one time we win a game with two up front with him being inneffectual, and without taking all the other contributions he has made this season (and every other) into account.

Apologies if I have misunderstood what you have said in any way, but my own interpretation of what you said does indeed make it sound entirely bonkers <ok>

If we are talking long term non starter then yes there does become a point when you sell, but look at it from a different point of veiw - he is not a high earner and is very happy at norwich with just signing new contract. Then wouldnt we be better off keeping him in the squad as if this said replacement gets a long term injury we are left with no creative player to bring in?

or if you say he becomes a sub then we can easily change the complete system in a game by bringing on one player .

so you can argue it any way you like really.

It is no more than just speculation because we don't know how CH intends to make the best use of him, I have suggested a formation, Beefy another. They may work well, they may not and that is the problem with Wes. He has bags of skills and a good few tricks but it is CH's job to get the best out of him.

Putting him wide left was obviously not the place to out him and I think most of us felt it was an odd choice but clearly CH does believe he needs to accommodate him as often as possible but as the OP highlights - how?

He is of value to the club, as is any other player but only if what the team is doing can make use of him, if they can't for whatever reason then consideration has to be made about letting him go.

We can argue about letting our best players going all day but other teams have made stranger choices, Cantona to Man Utd, RVP to Man Utd to name just two. On the surface these are pretty incredible decisions made by Leeds and Arsenal but for some reason they had met their sell by date for those clubs, Happens all the time otherwise their would be a much smaller transfer market <laugh>
