FRANKEL SET FOR OUTSTANDING LINE UP OF MARES

FRANKEL will start his new career as a stallion later this week and Juddmonte has released more details of the champion racehorse’s book of mares for 2013.

FRANKEL, who won all 14 of his races, will be visited by an outstanding line-up of mares, including around 60 that have either won a Gr.1, produced a Gr.1 winner – or both.

In addition to the high class mares already mentioned in the press, FRANKEL's book includes several dams of European Classic winners, including Flirtation (dam of English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Attraction), Honorine (dam of Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach), Lady Vettori (dam of French 2000 Guineas and French Derby winner Lope de Vega), Maycocks Bay (dam of dual Oaks winner Sariska), Musical Treat (dam of English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner Finsceal Beo), Quest To Peak (dam of English and French 1000 Guineas winner Special Duty), Soignee (dam of French Oaks winner Stacelita), Waldmark (dam of St Leger winner Masked Marvel) and Zomaradah (dam of Irish 2000 Guineas winner Dubawi).

Today's is the official start of the covering season.

Unfortunately we start with the sad news that US Horse of the Year RACHEL ALEXANDRA is in serious condition following surgery after complications arose following the birth of her Bernardini filly on Tuesday. The foal has been moved to a foster mare. Fingers crossed RA pulls through.

Nice on PN, where are the Darley mares going this year? Any to Frankel?
 
So far the only Darley mare I've seen for Frankel is Zomaradah - dam of Dubawi. Queen's Logic is owned by Rabbah Bloodstock which is basically an extension of Darley and she is also booked to him.

Interesting, couldn't get more or didn't want to support a rival stallion too much? Which non-Darley stallions have Darley gone to most this time round or is it pretty much all in house?
 
With all this horse meat saga going on in the news at the moment i would just like to know what this 'Bute' drug actually dos for the horse...?

Is it just a painkiller as ive read or is it used for a more specific pain/reason...?
 
Only 60 of the 135 mares booked to Frankel have been named so far, so I suspect there will be other Darley mares. We won't know full details until they are published in November/December in the Return of Mares.

Bute is a very common painkiller for horses. It is often given to horses with arthiritis of some form - I remember many of the riding school ponies I knew as a child seemed to receive a small dose of Bute on a daily basis, usually in a powder form mixed into their feed.

From Syria to Frankel - 308 years to perfection

In the year 1700 a horse is born in Syria. Four years later Thomas Darley buys the Arabian horse. He is shipped to Yorkshire and the unraced horse starts covering mares in 1705. In time he will be known as the Darley Arabian. Together with the Goldolphin Arabian and Byerley Turk they are to be called the ‘foundation sires' of the thoroughbred.

Sixty-four years later a horse is born (1764). He is a great-great-grandson of the Darley Arabian and his dam is a granddaughter of the Godolphin Arabian. He will be named Eclipse and walks 1,400 miles to race meetings across England to win all of his 18 races. He becomes a very influential sire because 250 years later 95 per cent of all living thoroughbreds can be traced back to Eclipse.

Fast forward 149 years and 13 generations of Eclipse descendants and another horse is born (1913). Owned and bred by the 17th Earl of Derby he is named Phalaris. Due to the restrictions of World War One he will only race at Newmarket, where he goes on to win 16 of his 24 starts including two renewals of the Champion Stakes.

Forty eight years and another four generations later, a horse is born (1961) in Canada. They will name him Northern Dancer. He goes on to win the Kentucky Derby in record time (until a certain Secretariat breaks it nine years later) before embarking on a hugely successful stud career that sees him command a stud fee of $1,000,000.

Northern Dancer becomes North America's most successful stallion of the 20th century, siring 147 stakes winners including three Derby winners: Nijinsky, Secreto and The Minstrel. Like Northern Dancer himself, all three are bred by E.P. Taylor and all three are trained at Ballydoyle in Ireland.

Twenty years later, yet another horse is born (1981). He's by the great Northern Dancer himself and his owner-breeder names him after a famous dance theatre in London - Sadler's Wells. Born in America, he is brought back to Ireland where he is trained at Ballydoyle by the great Vincent O'Brien. Sadler's Wells wins the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes (yes, the Eclipse) and the Irish Champion Stakes. After his race career Sadler's Wells is retired to Coolmore Stud. His first crop of foals in 1986 includes Breeders' Cup Turf winner In The Wings and Irish Derby winner Old Vic - both for owner Sheikh Mohammed. Sadler's Wells goes on to produce a total of 294 stakes winners.

Skip seventeen years. A horse is born (1998). They call the bay colt Galileo. He wins the Epsom and Irish Derby as well as the King George. Galileo takes up stud duties in 2002 and is an immediate success. Eight years after his first crop Galileo has sired 126 stakes winners including 31 individual Group 1 winners.

Three hundred and eight years after the Darley Arabian and 23 generations of sires later, a son of Galileo is born. They call him Frankel.​

I thought Bute's use in the training of racehorses was more widespread than you mention.
In more than a couple of books I've read that "he was impossible to train because he was ' this, that or the other' and so he was given Bute". Basically it is an anti-inflammatory drug but is not a steroid by any means. (It just removes pain and I'm sure there's a few on this forum who use a human equivalent: Bute is not used for humans because it causes anemia). I recall that a colt of the Queen's was mentioned in one book as being trained on Bute, and I believe Rock Roi was disqualified after winning his first 'disqualified' Ascot Gold Cup for traces of Bute.
I thought the important thing about Bute was that you could use it up to so many days before a horse raced, but if you went too close to the race that the drug could be detected and so the horse was deemed to be running under the effects of the drug. It was not illegal to give a racehorse Bute but it was illegal to have traces of the drug in the animal on raceday.
Maybe the laws have changed and Bute has been made totally illegal to use in the training of racehorses. I don't know but I hadn't heard that it had been made illegal.
I'll not go into the rights and wrongs of using Bute, that's another question altogether.
 
I didn't see any Aga Khan mares amongst the initial Frankel harem. Then again I may not be able to identify them. With his love of Never Bend blood and it being so strong in his mares, I'd have thought Frankel would appeal to him as having not one strand of Never Bend blood in his pedigree.
 
Bute is not illegal and a lot of racehorses are given it, but as you say there is a withdrawal time before a race. Having not worked in a racing yard I can't comment on how widespread the use is, but I do know plenty of "regular" horses that receive a daily dose.

I imagine the Aga Khan will send a few mares to Frankel. I'll look again at the list to see if I recognise any names amongst the 60 that have been released.
 
TARIYSHA was certainly bred by the Aga Khan and trained by John Oxx, though unraced.

I can't find a record of her being sold at public auction, but I think she has changed hands as her progeny have been listed as bred by the Yellow Bird Syndicate.
