...has apparently fatally shot his girlfriend????

Apparently he mistook her for a burglar, when she turned up early to surprise him on Valentines' Day! Ouch.

I changed over the channel. The story was too much to watch for me.

Once again, paranoia + guns = a bad combination.

It's now looking like it wasn't a case of mistaken identity, but a domestic, he might be going away for a while.

I agree with the guns comment, the beeb reckon that violent crime is so high, and the police so ineffectual, that many South Africans feel the need for a weapon for self-protection. It's surely just a case of escalation though? If you're trying to burgle a house, where you know the owner will probably have a gun, you won't just bring a knife, will you?

There's been a good few programs on parts of South Africa where people can hire very dodgy private protection. Even the police use these people when they're doing big raids and they're not exactly gentle.

Very sad for Steenkamp's family and I feel the true facts won't come out for a while. Gun's are very much like cars, they have their use's but can be dangerous as anything. I'm very glad I live in a country where its rare that the wrong people get their hands on these sorts of weapons.

Charged with murder thought it was manslaughter.

For a start in this country you have to have a licence and be vetted.

Apparently there were 'previous' incidents at his home so the whole mistaking her for a burglar is rubbish. It's going to be one hell of a fall from grace, one of the most recongnisable sport stars on the planet to serving a life sentence...

I bet Lance Armstrong is doing cartwheels. This makes cheating in a bike race seem like nothing.
