Walter really got to them eh? Every opportunity to apportion blame for anything to Walter is taken with such obvious beel. Even people referring him simply as "Walter" juices some folks tits...
Gazza was a super player. Also enjoyed life. Couldnt help but warm to him despite him being a ger. **** to his missus right enough, but the drink was (and is) a lot to blame there. Hooe he gets help. Doubt he'll ever be cured though. You never really are when an alcho like him im afraid
I tend to agree, I liked him, even when he was at Rangers. A bit of an idiot at times but have'nt we all been... at times. I fear his biggest problem is in his head, he needs a spell in an institution for a while to hopefully get him back on track or even just levelled out. I actually feel very sorry for him and hope he comes out a better man. A wiser one even.
Sorry but I had to laugh at the stuff earlier on today about the Celtic fans allegedly singing about Gazza. Whether or not they did is a moot point, why the **** would Gazza care anyway? Some of the responses have been interesting. The notion that Walter is to blame is a bit absurd. Years back a big crowd of my workmates and I used to socialise regularly. Some drank more than others. A couple of the folk we were with are now alcoholics, is that my then bosses fault? Also remember back then football and society were very different; we didn’t suck on the teat of the nanny state back then. Employers did not have the same obligation to show faux concern for every character flaw or supposed weakness. Nowadays everyone seems to want confess to having some bizarre condition. Watch daytime tv and they flaunt them like badges of honour, God how bad must the other teams have been during the 9Os's if our pure mental jakeball, alky squad could win 9 in a row? **** the standard of football in Europe was so bad that these lushes nearly reached a champions league final. Gazza was never my favourite by a long shot. Before he signed I disliked him almost as much as I did Ian Black. To be honest I thought he was a bit of a tit. The guy did have genuine issues though; I remember one documentary highlighting his OCD. I think he's also an insomniac with attention deficit disorder. Adding Danny Baker and the ginger geek Evans to the equation didn't help either. They indulged his behaviour far more than any team mate did. He sure sold a lot of replica strips though. I saw today a picture of him today supposedly pissing into a plant pot in the Daily Record. At least it wasn't on Eric Bo Anderson this time. The papers don't help in these situations either all their fake concern while they desperately await their prey's latest **** up. Is a photograph of someone with clear mental health problems urinating on the patio plants really necessary? Perhaps the target audience concerned are folk like the poster on here who said he's in his dead pool? At the end of the day (as is the case with anyone with addiction issues) the only person who can help Gazza is himself.
Probably his last chance. Has he any family left that haven't ****ed him over? Seems old friends who probably never see him have been embarrassed into sending him to the states. If he's left to himself then he's finished. Brutal state of affairs.
Gazza was reasonably in control of himself and his life until he joined Rangers. He suddenly became the focus of attention even more in Glasgow than anywhere previously, he became such a hero of the Huns fans who were not content Unless they were putting a drink in his hand. Gazza thought he was born again and went to heaven, quite literally sipped it all. Unfortunately the same thing would have happened if he had joined Celtic.
What is this nonsense about alcoholism being an illness? I'm drunk, not ill. You ****ing bigots. (Moses, very excellent post)
Flippant remark, was what I made. But I would still contend alcoholism is not Gazzas illness. As Moses points out he has other problems, for which he turns to drink. As Moses also points out, he has been pampered and encouraged by people around him. He has to find his own way out. I wish him well in that.
I think it just shows what happens when you take an extremely emotionally immature person and thrust them into the limelight without giving them proper support. For years people said he was a disater waiting to happen and sadly it's being proved right. A lot of managers and agents probably could have done more but as Moses said it was a different time - and Walter smith and Terry venables and co were paid to win football matches not be social workers. He was a great playerbut like many others had a nasty streak on the ptich as well. Cantona and Zidane were two others in that respect - and no I'm not bracketing them all togther on ability before anyone says anything!
Smith looked after Gazza well IMO. He even took him in for Xmas dinner one year. People say smith encouraged his drinking are talking ****. Smith dropped him because he caught him having a beer once. Told him to to go home just before kick off.
Although this is well documented, Timmy likes to forget things like this, doesn't fit in with their agenda.
