Nicky Henderson was in tears after Darlan's fatal fall and said: "It's some game, isn't it? Why is it always the good ones."

Got to feel for everyone of them connected to this wonderful horse...

It's days like today which bring the racing family together. Thoughts of winnings and returns etc go out the window and attention turns immediately to the welfare of the horse. Pisses me off when people outside the game slate racing saying the crap they say. You only have to look at nickys tears and that tells you all you need to know. Sincere commiserations to connections of Darlan RIP

thats terrible news.

I just missed the race itself but from the comments on here it sounds like it was an horrific fall.
after his great performance on Boxing Day I couldn't see him getting beat today.

I feel absolutely drained and I was only listening to it on the radio. Very sad, and I just hope that they can pull something out of the bag with Binocular at the festival.

Picked up the result on my Blackberry and was over the moon to have landed a very nice bet on Rock On Ruby. Now back in the office and read about the terrible fate of Darlan and am just numb. Very, very sad indeed, words just fail me. RIP Darlan a horse of huge potential and condolences to connections. Shocking news.

Main thoughts are with DARLAN's lad/lass who has to face the journey home with one less horse in the horse box, back to an empty stable in the yard. No one will have a closer bond with the horse than him/her.

In much better news, Derek Thompson has been given the all clear and his cancer has gone. He tweeted this a few minutes ago:

"@tommoracing: Thankyou to everyone at ADenbrokes- the cancer has gone!!! Thankyou for all your messages of support-they got me through it! WOW!"

Great to hear

**** sake, racing sometimes just can be so cruel. RIP Darlan and commiserations to everyone involved with the horse. was a hollow result for the winner.

i wouldnt neccessarily blame AP at the last, these things happen but its still horrible to see when it does.the fly a shoo in now.

Thanks PN, as always you provide an important insight. I will spare a thought for their loss too.

A nice card for a Monday at Doncaster but a distinctively average handicap hurdle to finish proceedings. However, that is the race that has me intrigued.
Tony Carroll is a trainer who likes a punt so if the money doesnt come for this one then we will know its not on. In an attempt to beat him to the punch however my money is already on SHARE OPTION @ 33-1 4.35 Doncaster. This horse isnt getting any younger but he is very well handicapped on form as recent as twelve months ago. He is also definitely match fit as he has had a couple of spins on the flat.
He is a course and distance winner off a mark of 100 and won twelve months ago off a mark of 93. His recent runs over hurdles have been races that he had little chance in due to ground or distance and thus he has been kindly treated to a drop by the handicapper.
Carroll confuses matters by having Brennan on his other runner but I feel the claimer is on SHARE OPTION to get a further 7lbs in the bank. He is a very shrewd operator and I hope I have read this right.
Keep an eye on the evening moves but try not to miss the boat!

4 out I was thinking I was a genius, sorry guys I got it all wrong. I dont suppose many of us care about our cash today after Darlan's sad demise.

I think you definitely read it right Stick and it was clear much was expected as the SP of 13-2 was a crazy price, we see each day though that some plans come off and others dont. This one did not but it was still a fantastic spot on your part.

As you say by then it did not really matter anyway. I went from watching what I thought was the hurdle performance of the season so far as Darlan looked to stroll past Rock on Ruby without even stretching his legs to feeling completely sick of it all seeing him on the ground. It really is the harshest of sports at times.
