Sometimes you just gotta laugh at the stories..

Sunderland are closing in on strike targets Ruud van Nistelrooy and Kevin Doyle.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is in pole position to land the Dutchman on a free transfer as his contract ends at Hamburg.

But Bruce will have to fork out over £60,000 a week to entice the 34-year-old former Manchester United striker.

Sunderland will launch an £8million bid for Wolves striker Kevin Doyle this summer.

Steve Bruce has identified the Republic of Ireland international as a possible replacement for the departed Darren Bent.

And having banked £24million from the Bent sale, Bruce goes into the next transfer window with the cash clout to land Doyle.

The Black Cats boss is targeting three attackers for the new campaign in August with injured Fraizer Campbell out for 12 months and Danny Welbeck going back to Manchester United at the end of his loan spell.

great signing for us fans, easy to learn new song, we know Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed so Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuud will be a doddle

<laugh>

I think the Metro has overtaken the News of the World for ridiculous transfer speculation.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will add nothing to our club. Trust me. What we dont need is the club trying to pull the wool over our eyes by getting a 'name' who couldnt give a rats arse about SAFC to come her efor £60 or £70k per week. I'd have sooner kept Bent.

Kevin Doyle is different and exactly the sort of player we should be looking to IMO. Solid, down to earth lads who will roll theor sleeves up and work their bollocks off for the cause. Doyle, Adam, N'Zogbia (maybe not a work horse but he is a cracking player) are my sorts of players not the big name 'stars' who dont care about anything but money.

Doyle has 17 goals in 67 games. That's 1 in 4, or 9 a season. Is that enough for our striker, bearing in mind the lack of backup of goals from midfield ?

The thing is, we rely to heavily on forwards to score goals and a couple of goal scoring midfielders was on my list. The TEAM need to score goals not just forwards and in any case, Doyle would be only one of three I have said we need up front. Also, I didn't say Doyle would be number one striker any way? Did I?

PS - 9 goals a season at the minute would make him almost our top scorer?

Yes, when you've someone as prolific as Bent, you can hide the fact that no one else is contributing. Just get it into the penalty area and job done, etc. (O.k., he missed a lot of chances, but he's still fourth top EPL scorer THIS season, after changing clubs and a month's injury). But once you're without a Bent, the problems are fully exposed. We need players who can score from other positions, and, Bardsley apart, we just haven't got them.
