OK, I’m not and have never considered myself racist and if this comes across as seeming to be so my apologies.
I was claiming ESA support as my health doesn’t let me work atm or in the considerable future. Recently the government brought in new laws that meant I could only claim for a maximum of 12 months, which was over as of last May. The way it works is that if you were contributions based or income based there is a difference. I have worked and contributed taxes throughout my 40 odd years of working life and have been lucky enough to have never been out of employment, but this government have deemed it that I do not qualify for benefit whereas if I’d never worked I would be able to claim said benefit indefinitely!! It further seems that I cannot claim unemployment benefit because I’m considered to be too ill for work. I cannot claim anything and I’m feeling quite pissed about it especially after casually talking to a friend that works for the job centre when she informed me how many immigrants come to this country to work and after a while for whatever reason give up working and go straight on benefits!! I'm so pleased that my contributions and taxes is going to help them!!! I suppose I’m a little fortunate that my wife works and I receive some disability benefit at the moment but what about the others who find their selves in a similar situation who don’t have this backup.
I’m actually pleased that my poor deceased father who spent 4 years in a prison camp and others who fought alongside him are no longer around to witness what their sacrifices have been devalued to. I’m tired of fighting now, absolutely fed up talking to people who haven’t got a clue about the rules and can only say “sorry there’s nothing we can do” even letters to them from my MP doesn’t bring any results.
I can only hope that our children and grandchildren can sort this mess of a country out and return it to be something to be proud of, as for me at the moment I can only think the sooner I’m out of it the better

Sussex!
Keep your chin up fella. <ok>

We have been conned for too long by all the main political parties to enter into wars that have nothing to do with us. It's just egotistical fools writing their names into history pretending that we are still a superpower. Think of the billions/trillions wasted keeping the bogeyman at bay and how many mainland attacks there have been? Imagine how all that money alone could have improved life for those truly in need and those less able.

Apathy let the condem government into power. Tory's are and always will the nasty party to the working classes and those less able to defend themselves, but unfortunately Labour's namby pamby love in with immigrants and a small bone idol life long sub culture have created a free for all with the benefits system. It's the genuine silent majority who are always up in arms in the privacy of their own homes that frustratedly trundle on, careful that they are not accused of race hatred by the state who are slowly controling their every movement. One day the silent majority will say no more.

I hope your health improves or stabilises soon m8.

Bloody hell - powerful stuff there Sussex and you have my fullest sympathy, not that it'll help you much.

Not going to go down the racial route but it's about time this country looked after its' own rather than the rest of the world. That may seem small minded and parochial, but circumstances like yours are all too frequent.

I'm extremely fortunate to have good health and sufficient personal means to more than get by. What pisses me off is that others who have worked hard all their life and contributed to this welfare state then fail to get the support when their need comes around.

I'll say no more on the subject other than to wish you, your wife and family the very best of good fortune in the future.....and yes mate - there is a future no matter what you say in your last sentence. <ok>

So sorry to hear that Sussex but keep your head up and be proud for what you have achieved and your father and his colleagues before him.

It's about time this government in particular and the country in general wakes up, smells the coffee and realises that those who have lived and worked in this country all their life should have and deesrve more support than some Johnny Come Lately and family fresh off the plane (or underside of a lorry) from God knows where or some UK born and bred professional scrounging family!!!

Human Rights Act, my ar$e!!!! Waht about the human rights of good people like you and your family?

Of course your not racist.......however I do believe that immigrants are made scapegoats for every social ill in this country. In my opinion, its' not the immigrants that are the problem (after all they're only a tiny minority)...but the section of our society who believe its' their right to live the whole of their lives on benefits...the fact that people blame immigration is the government succesfully directing the blame away from the real problem i.e. a section of our society (born & bred in the UK) who have never, and will never do a days' work, who get their rent & rates paid for, spend every day either in the pub or at home smoking dope & having orgies.....god I could go on.

By the way, I'm not talking about those who can't get a job or are unable to work for whatever reason (I've been there, believe me) but at the people who make a decision to virtually make themselves unemployable and live off the labours of the rest of the country.

Hope things work out for you Sussex.

Sorry but this is inaccurate.

If youd never worked and not paid any contributions you wouldnt even have got the year. You dont qualify for Income Based as your wife is working.

Firstly Sussex I hope you get well real soon. I'm with Whiffletree on this one, yes there are immigrants on benefits and they are all to frequently targeted in the press, however, why doesn't the press target the British families that are 3rd generation benefit claimants?
Before I left the UK my next door neighbour was one of these 3rd generation benefit claimants, she was pissed every time she got her benefit money and many at time she said to the missus, and I, that she was much better off than working so she saw no point in getting a job.
There were weekly parties at her place going on until 3-4 in the morning, she threatened other neighbours with violence and the police did very little to stop this! I have no doubt her poor daughter will be the 4th generation benefit claimant and the cycle will continue.
Sadly the powers that be are too far removed from the realities to know the real problems and the country is too broke to fix it.
I was considering renting my property out prior to leaving the UK but realised I would be looking for tenants every 6 months due to this neighbour from hell, decided to sell instead, much less hassle.

With you on this one taff, the biggest problem is 2nd and 3rd generation claimants of families that have never worked. These are the ones that should be forced to take jobs then there wouldn't be the perceieved problem of immigrants taking jobs.
By all means top up benefits if they have taken a low paid job but atleast make them get off their arses and do something. Why should we all keep these families while they do nothing?

Ok Hilts, then how come I've been told by the DWP that if I was income based I could still claim but because I'm contribution based i can't
Taken from Gov website,,,,,,,
Contribution-based ESA lasts 1 year if you’re in the Work-Related Activity Group (you may be moved onto income-based ESA after this time).

sad to hear that sussex.

it certainly isnt racist to hold the views that you have, i cant really offer any specific advice, but what i will say is that we certainly dont need more cheap labour when we have 8% unemployment and 20% youth unemployment. in any case they contribute very little in the way of taxes because they earn so little, so there is no need for it in the next 3-5 years.

sadly nothing will happen, it will only get worse when the romanians and bulgarians join the EU in 2014 and this time it'll be pickpockets and not just labourers!

Sussex mate I'm in the same boat,

6 years ago I had 2 strokes within 5 weeks and had to have an operation on my carotid artery, I went back to work after 3 months although my speech and general health was still not perfect.
3 years ago I collapsed in work and was diagnosed with Vasodepressor Vasovagal syncope and Cerebrovascular disease.

In April this year my ESA was stopped because my wife works 30hrs / week.

Those who earn millions get a tax cut of £105,000 a year (just under £2,020 a week) but they take £95 a week from genuine people who are too ill to work.

Sorry to hear that Dave, as a direct input from my local MP I once received a phone call from the head of DWP for the South region and she actually told me that most of the advisers that you speak to on the phone are only admin and are themselves ignorant of the rules and cannot be relied upon for advice, when I enquired as to why they were then taking calls she couldn't answer, unbelievably one of these 'advisers' actually tried to tell me I should have planned for this, ok maybe there's some truth in that but how many of us think that we'll end up in a situation where our body lets us down.

Aber, not much better down here now, When I first moved down here working on the Aircraft in 1988 I had over 2000 work colleagues, in 2009 it was down to under 300, ok aircraft are newer and a lot more reliable now but they won't be forever and when they start to deteriorate there will not be enough engineers to work them, guess what happens then, no more 300 and the work outsourced to China <doh>
