Speed is always relevant. Reading the game < Speed. This fact is the reasonthe giving away of why I want Papa Waigo back, but he is under an illegal contract in the Arab league. Redknapp IN

You know bloody well what I meant. But just for you:-

Ala - Bobby Moore - fast legs are not the be all and end all of a CB's needs. If a centre back is slower than some it can be overcome by having a quick mind. Bobby was renowned for his ability to read the game. Being able to read the game does mean that a centre back can compensate most of the time for a lack of speed, by being in the right place at the right time. Lack of awareness can leave the quickest of centre backs hopelessly out of position. We have had centre backs that had speed but could not be declared as being up to the job.

Being able to read the game cuts out many last ditch despairing tackles and the giving away of stupid free kicks.

For me, being able to tackle firmly and fairly added to an ability to read the game can be as important at times as being able to burn up the ground through sheer speed.
Steve De Ridder has speed to burn as does Jonathan Forte but neither are of any use without the mental ability to know how to use it correctly/adequately in the best interests of the team. Adam Lallana is not a speedy winger but is an invaluable member of the team.

As for your last sentence. If you were slightly slower when writing that post, you might just have been able to say something coherent.
And as for Papa Waigo, since when was he a centre back?

So no speed is not always relevant.

Sorry about this rant but this obsession with speed sometimes makes me wonder whether we know what we are watching when watching football being played by sklilful players. It can be helpful to have speed but the mind is greater than the sword.

Bologna have flatly refused an offer from Southampton for 20-year-old Danish central defender Frederik Sorensen.
Reports in Italy claim the Serie A club gave Saints a curt reply to their attempts to buy the ex-Juventus youth team player in this month's transfer window.
Sorensen, who signed for £2million a year ago, has made ten starts for Bologna and scored one goal in the league this season - attracting the interest of Saints officials who appear to have targeted players from the club in the last six months.
Nigel Adkins swooped to sign Gaston Ramirez in the summer and has also been trying to capture Sorensen's central defensive partner Davide Astori in this transfer window.
There is no further news on that bid but Bologna's move to reveal that they refused the Sorensen offer could be designed to appease their own fans as they prepare to lose Astori.

Ten dollars to the first person to find a match report featuring the storied partnership of Sorensen and Astori.
