Bloody hell - this has a last day of the window deal written all over it, it it happens at all.

Thing is, it's not as if Astori is out of favour or unwanted at his current club, so what would we expect them to do? We make out like they're seeing the name Southampton, and looking to rinse us. But reality is, he's an asset they want at their club, and if they let him go, they want full value. Plus it's not just us in for him - I doubt we are seen as financial behemoths. Any Premiership club is going to get the same treatment (except maybe eg. Swansea, or other clubs with managers with great personal contacts at clubs from which they're buying), as we're a rich league, and selling clubs know the price of staying in the Premiership this season is the highest its ever been.

Saints would I hope do the same in similar circumstances. eg. if someone came in for Adam.

Cagliari are short of money. They will sell, but like Bologna, are holding out for as much as possible.

Bit of a gamble. Leave it too long and we risk being gazzumped! That said I don't want us to be fleeced. Glad it's down to NC!

Seems to me that we offer a price which matches the asking value (£9.5m = €12m), the club agrees with it, then a day later they say, oh no, we actually meant €15m....

Well reportedly we've only offered £8m so it's no wonder they haven't accepted it!

There's nothing to this idea that because everyone knows we are rich they are fleecing us, the same thing happens to every club, and of course Cagliari are well within their rights to hold out for as much as they can. They don't care who they get the money from, they just want to get as much as possible.

They say they want £12m, but they know they won't get that, it's just part of negotiations. I reckon if we offer them £10m they'll bite our hands off.

I think fifa and football manager obviously help people to know details about players they otherwise wouldn't, but Astori played for Italy against England recently and Ramirez played against GB in the olympics, so even if you're completely ignorant of those games you still have had an opportunity to learn about these players (or you could take an interest in Italian football generally of course in which case you're probably aware of them).

I don't think it's realistic for us to buy big-name players who everyone has heard of and even if we could, why pay double for someone who isn't as good but who people have heard of?

Incidentally, I'd argue that perhaps Ramirez fits into that category anyway, he is an established international after all.

I have no interest in Italian football from afar - in the past i have been taken to a couple of games in Italy when there with work, but in general their ultra-defensive football has always bored me. Notwithstanding this, Italy has produced some outsanding footballers down the years, Maldini and laterly Del Piero and Pirlo i admired.
But in general i dont recognise most of the names bandied about during transfer windows - a footballer doesnt become a household name after one or two games for Italy or Uruguay.
Ramirez may have played a few games for Uruguay but prior to Olympics i hadnt heard of him, and only then did i notice him briefly when he scored from a free kick, and then all the hysteria on here when Saints were going to sign him. However he only 20 or whatever so plenty of time to become well known yet. I dont rate Ramirez as a big name signing, although an expensive one for Saints. He has been OK for us and i chant his name like everybody else as he is a Saint at present, but he is not a game-changing superstar in my eyes - yet. Maybe, hopefully, on Sat at Villa Park he will upgrade my opinion !

Amen to that!

dman.. 'ultradefensive' would make me think I'd died and gone to heaven. 0.0 Draws and a few 1.0 wins would see us home. We could worry about being exciting next season.

Ha ha - well maybe one or two results like that if you like Fran to get us some points, but not game after game which used to be the norm in Serie A, B, C ......
Give me Saints early 80's fast, one-touch, accurate passing game any day - it doesnt matter who you have in goal when you can play like that.

used to love doing that "play the one touch" chant and watching Ball, Channon and co run rings around defences!

On a side note whilst on the subject of Gaston Ramirez, my neighbour's son advises that he has just fitted a tv system in Ramirez's large house in Chilworth. He says that Ramirez speaks very little English and that there were empty champagne & beer bottles lying all over the place. Must have had our Guly around for a quick one before tea !
