With the position we're in, in our first season back in Prem, I don't think a January window £10m CB signing from Serie A is the way to go. Just creates too much of a certain avoidable pressure, a la QPR. With Maya's and Jose improvement I think we should stick to what we've got, and possibly what we know (Dawson). Plus I recall Gianluigi Festa and Marco Materazzi picking up many a red card when entering the PL. Still he would be an exciting signing.

Problem is that with injuries starting to kick in, and with no real quality outside of our 1st 13 to 14 players, we will be in trouble really quick if we don't make best use of the window. We have no idea if Dawson is being sold or how much he'd cost, and other than him I can't think of many other alternatives from the PL that wouldn't destroy us in wages.

If Dawson is available I imagine QPR would be ahead of us on his list of possible destinations.

Yep, thin on the ground solid prem CB's...and keepers' , for that matter.

Strange, as it always the strikers who are sold at crazy premiums, mind you that crazy top bracket is set by the Sheiks and Oligarchs.

Davide Astori's agent has admitted there is a gulf between the offer Saints have made for the player, and the fee Cagliari wish to receive.

Speaking to Sky Sports agent Renzo Contratto said.

'There is an important offer from Southampton but we don't know if Cagliari want to let him go. There is a big difference between the bid and the request of the Italian club, which is about £12million.'

His agent confirms that if the offer is accepted, he would have no problems moving to Southampton.

It's suggested we have bid around £8million for the player so f

Have to admire Cortese for sticking to his idea of the type of football that Saints should play, but only time will tell if this is the way to go rather than being pragmatic and buying some experienced but not necessarily exciting PL players. And no, I have no idea who. Things are beginning to turn round in the league, but I am worried that things may change again after our rivals buy in this window. Am beginning to get nervous now, though I may feel better if we actually buy someone.

Tbh all the talk bandied about involving millions of pounds and footballers that i have never heard of puts me off football. Most people on this site seem to know all about these jokers, is this from playing computer games like Fifa etc ? I am not into computer games full stop but my kids are and they know some of these players names when i ask them about them. I prefered it when Laurie turned up out of the blue with Keegan, who everybody knew about - that really did make the football world sit up and take notice ! It was like it would be if Messi signed for Saints tomorrow.

hopefully in a year or two when the world has heard of Cortesse, as soon as they see an offer from the saints they just accept it, knowing full well they wont win!

Dman that day is ingrained in my memory. Was in shock for days afterwards. Brilliant coup! Don't think you could manage it now with instant comms it's very hard to keep anything under wraps.

I think fifa and football manager obviously help people to know details about players they otherwise wouldn't, but Astori played for Italy against England recently and Ramirez played against GB in the olympics, so even if you're completely ignorant of those games you still have had an opportunity to learn about these players (or you could take an interest in Italian football generally of course in which case you're probably aware of them).

I don't think it's realistic for us to buy big-name players who everyone has heard of and even if we could, why pay double for someone who isn't as good but who people have heard of?

Incidentally, I'd argue that perhaps Ramirez fits into that category anyway, he is an established international after all.
