If rumours are true about Bent to the Mackams, Campbell could be the missing piece of Bruce's promotion winning jigsaw. He has the experience at this level, we have to forget all thats gone on in the past and look at the situation that is in front of us NOW. Maybe the old experienced striker we are all crying out for could turn out to be not so old after all. I thought about this yesterday and today and kept coming up with the same conclusion. If Campbell had been on that pitch yesterday he would have scored at least 2 of the chances we didn't take. The club is a totally different place to the one he turned down.
I'd love to see him back, but the fact that he only has six months of his contract to run makes the mechanics of a move to us all but impossible. Sunlan will not allow him out on loan for obvious reasons, and if we stump up a fee for him, and if he agreed to drop a division, then we would have to at least match his current wages, I would have thought anyway. My guess is that if FC doesn't get a PL move then he'll let his contract run out and take a golden hello from some 'lucky' club at the start of next season, now at that point we may be in the frame!
Aside from the fact that he has had 2 major knee injuries and not done anything of note since he was last here (5 years ago). If we only have the funds to sign one, I'd rather it was Danny Graham.
Well I have great memories of FC and think that he could replicate what he did here last time, past injuries or not, but I agree that DG would also be a good shout............................either would do me tbh
Spot on Chazz. Meyler had a few crunching tackles yesterday. Major knee injuries are not that major anymore. We are talking about top class athletes and precision medical treatment. Only a players physcological state restricts them becoming the player the were before the "major" injury.
Regarding knee injuries I think some of our fans have more psychological damage after the doomed purchase of Bullard. Not all players, fortunately, have his 'money before football' mentality, oh and Brown & Duffen are no longer at the club either to sanction such a 'deal'!
To be honest I think if we are to get him it's most likely to be a loan. We pay a fee so Sunderland get something from him, if we get promoted he signs for us, if we don't then he can go where he wants and were not stuck with a huge earner on the books. It's in everybody's favour that way and the Allams have pretty much said they'll fund some big wages for a premier league striker like they said they would last season.
A major knee injury also has to be taken into consideration - lightning always strikes twice. Bullard and Garcia spring to mind. You've had one or two, you're likely to get more.
Not followed his career but called up to the England squad and a wonder goal last season.... Scored the other week too. Biggest thing is SB has said he wants him if he can get him, apart from that I'll bow to your superior knowledge
Spot on. FC has done norhting much since his season with us. We can do much much better for the money FC will cost. As a FAT in the summer is another story but for now WE NEED someone who can do it now. Not maybe now. If its not a PL proven scorer (ie. Morison or Graham) then Kevin Phillips. Darren Bent looks like he has a choice of Wigam, DQPR or Newcastle before Sunderland i would suggest. Danny Graham could well end up with the mackems. twt.
If we got him on that basis it would be a master stroke, and if it happened that way we may even get DG as well, and if that was the case, to be perfectly frank, they might as well just give us the ****ing Championship trophy right now............seriously!
Not always the case, once you have a cruciate reconstructed its as strong as it was before the injury. Think its down to the player not being fully confident in the strength of the knee, or so I have been told by the surgeon who did mine.
Getting an England cap doesn't mean much these days. He's in the same camp as David Nugent, Michael Ricketts and Jay Bothroyd.
He's just back from injury though isn't he. His career seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
Whilst he would be a handy squad player I dont see him as being the player we need. The Allams have quite clearly stated they were willing to pay for a proven goal scorer for half a season last year to make that final push. I dont see FC as being a proven goal scorer (I dont count goals 5 years ago!!) Someone like DG seems more realistic to what the Allams want, and why would SB argue with that??
