Waghorn he had to sell to buy Gyan
Jones just wasnt cutting it and even his most die hard fan must have been thinking what the hell was going on.
bent, who the hell knows what happened there.
Bent went in jan, quality players cost a fortune in January, Campbell was due back and we had welbeck at the time, both got crocked though :(

We can only have a 25 man squad, anymore and we cant submit them (under 21 doesnt count) so he had to get rid of some also rans, would you rather he kept Healy and Murphy?

Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market, and most foreigners take a year to settle into the lifestyle of be in the PL and in England.

last week i have no idea what he was doing, panicing probably, Sat he got it spot on, Liverpool away he got it spot on (freak goal by them), Chelsea he got it spot on etc etc (again every manager has a nightmare tactically, arsene wenger today for instance, chelsea first half today).

Zendon like you, disagree with that, look at yesterday.

We were 7th at christmas, rubbish, and thats coming from a mag, sorry got to disagree, he has spent 60 but recouped 54 or something along lose lines.

He signed a very good Striker in Gyan who looks like good value. Got us the bargin of the season in Bramble. Managed to attract names like Sessegnon and Muntari when other "bigger" clubs were interested. We had a great start to the season and in many cases we took on the top sides and won. He is building a young side for the future rather than going for a quick fix. He has managed to get the best from some non performing players: Bardo, Ferdinand. He has bought through youth players like Henderson, Meyler and Colback into the side and improved them.

The above was just off the top of my head.

All very good points from both of you, so I am not going to go over old ground yet again. Yes, SB has done a lot in his time at the club, including bringing through the youngsters, but by his own admission, he actually has nothing to do with negociations for signing players. He identifies who he would like and SNQ takes it from there, so it's actually SNQ we should be thanking for bringing in the players.

The 2 major problems that I have with SB are his tactical limitations and the fact that he blew a great chance for us to achieve something by not strengthening our striking options in January. Having sufficient strikers was critical to the success of our season, because our midfielders score so few goals. I just can't bring myself to forgive him for such a monumental cock up!

The thing is Dorset is that there was hardly any decent strikers available in January, and the ones that were any good went for silly money eg Bent, Carroll and Torres.
I can't see how you can blame Bruce for that. And it would have been silly to keep Bent once it had been made public that he had went behind the clubs back to negotiate a deal with Villa; the fans would have crucified him.

He admitted in an article in the paper last week that he quote "pulled the plug" on a deal to sign a striker in January He stated that "the figures weren't quite right" so he pulled out. If the "figures" mean cash, then he's lost out anyway with our current league position. I believe that the difference between 7th (achievable at the time) and 14th place in the league is at least £3.5m!

As for Bent, I agree his hands were tied with that one and there was nothing that he could do, except let SNQ get as much money as possible out of the deal with Villa. However, much more effort should have gone into finding at least a short term deal for a striker or bringing in a loan striker from abroad. It was suicide not to....

btw, you have the honour of receiving my 1,000th post!

It was either signing Fuller for an extraordinary fee, or nothing. I would have done the same as Bruce and not tried to chuck money anywhere to get a fairly poor, injured striker.

....and your source of information is?

As I recall, the club strongly denied having ever put a bid in for Fuller?

Sorry, I can't remember the exact facts, but I thought that we were poised to sign him. If not, sorry!

No, don't apologise Jersey :) I remember at the time that there was a lot of talk that it would be Fuller coming in, but the club always denied it. Bruce did admit that he had "taken a look" at the possibility of Fuller, but it was dead in the water very quickly, when £5m was quoted! :)

well there you go then, looing at a striker but the money wasnt right, 5mil for fuller is definately not quite right. (i dont know if it was fuller, but by the sounds of it it was) and even if it wasnt, why should we buy a player we value at X amount and have to pay XX amount for?

I expect we'll never know who it was that SB pulled the plug on, but I agree, Fuller was never worth £5m!

Wind up my fellow Sunderland supporters Dorset - well people like you have been winding me up on here this week with your Bruce out opinions.

And then someone suggested bringing back Waghorn................earth calling Orson, come in Orson.

You can have a mass debate as much as you want, the one undeniable fact is that Bruce is still our manager, you can kick and scream as much as you like but Bruce will still be here next season.

And thats why I'm chuckling to myself.

Point 1. - This is a forum for people to voice their opinions. If you disagree with an opinion, explain why, instead of being offensive to fellow fans with the comments that you posted earlier.

Point 2. - No one suggested bringing back Waghorn. The point was made that he was sold and not replaced.

Point 3. - Yes he is, but for how long is very much open to debate. I'm 50 not 5 so I don't "kick and scream".

Point 4. - Glad you think it's all so funny!

Just nit picking the bits in bold here.

on one hand you say Bruce has nothing to do with bringing in players/fees/wages etc

then you say further down we had a chance to bring someone in, but the figures were not right

and then you blame Bruce for not getting a striker

Surely if Bruce just gives the names to NQ and ES and they do the rest, its their fault the figures were not correct, and they are to blame for not bringing a striker in IE: Bruce wanted one, gave the name to NQ and Short but they didnt like the money, so said no.

so how on earth can Bruce be blamed?????

Its like NQ and ES can do no wrong (no one is perfect) but for every little thing (and with the benfit of hindsight most of the time) Bruce gets ALL the backlash and criticism going.

Point 1. - This is a forum for people to voice their opinions. If you disagree with an opinion, explain why, instead of being offensive to fellow fans with the comments that you posted earlier. - I'm sick of explaining - logic does not work with the naysayers, doom mongers - its like banging your head off a brick wall.

I'm sorry if I appear rude - I just want to move on, this has been done to death - there has been no speculation in the media - none at all - why? Because the professional sports journalists know Bruce has been dealt a poor hand with injuries(it is incredulous Bruce can be blamed for these it really is) and Bent being sold has unsettled other players impacting upon there performances as they look over their shoulder wondering why a club would sell their talisman.

Point 2 No one suggested bringing back Waghorn. The point was made that he was sold and not replaced. - ok, point taken, however I never saw any real class in Waghorn and that seems to have been born out by his demise at Leicester(although he was unlucky with the manager who signed him moving on), Waghorn v Gyan, no comparison(not saying you were making one, just my observation)

point 3 see my first reposte, however the fat lady has not even in the wings, let alone doing her scales before singing so why cannot talk about something topical.

point 4 yes I do, people take themselves far to seriously, life is too short

We are all sick of it mate and who knows who is right............end of the day we all want what is best for SAFC, and what is best is success. it is not this player or that player or this manager or that manager, what we want is success..........problem is not all agree on how to get the best

bruce is gonna stay, no doubt about that,

i'm a bruce to stay merchant, but admit i find him frustrating at times, with his negative interviews, and bigging up average teams.

i want him to get it right, but already dubious, with some of the transfer rumours floating around.

time will tell, and hopefully this time next year, everyone will be united behind bruce..
