Should Wenger stay or go?

There's a lot of talk about Wenger's position at Arsenal, so it's good to have a thread dedicated to the matter, where the issue can be debated and discussed.

Personally speaking, I think he needs to go at the end of the season, regardless if he gets us 4th or not, we need a fresh new start. Wenger's taken us as far as he can, and we seem to be getting worse under him, with no clear progress being made.

His post match comments should be enough for anyone to want him out, always praising the effort of the team after they lose or draw, the Wenger of old would never do that, I remember when we drew 2-2 with Southampton in the 2005 season, we came back to 2-2 in the last minute, this was the game right after we lost our unbeaten run to United, so a draw was actually much better than losing as it would be 2 losses in a row, after being unbeaten in 49 games. But in the post match commentary, Wenger was actually UNHAPPY and didn't praise and lavish the team, like he does now when we lose or get bad draws. I don't see how he can continually praise the team when they lose and drop points, which simply illustrate he's out of touch, and needs to go.

Wenger, you know your time is up, many fans have lost their patience with you, your ways, and project, sorry, :-), we gave you lot's of time for your project, 8 years now, and nothing's happening, things are just getting worst, so time to go.
 
Lets wait till the summer, if we reinforce strongly in Jan and early summer and get rid of the dead weight the I will give wenger another year to show that he still has it his contract ends at the end of next season anyway. If we get Zaha and Henry only and not much in Summer then maybe it is time.

But how long have we been saying that? I was of that camp, but eventually I saw change is never happening with Wenger. I always said ok I'll give Wenger next season to get things going again as we went through a rough one, so now we will move upwards, yet that never seems to happen, so I just say it's time for him to go.
 
How can wenger be blamed for that performance last night? the team didn't show up so why should the manager get the blame. Wenger has been with arsenal throughout our skint period so its only fair that he should be here when we have cash to spend. Why do alot of people on this think that a change of manager will bring results? If we bring in another manager he isn't going to get more money to spend and we would be finishing 6th/7th every season.

And its so naive to analyse his post match interview, managers especially foreign ones give very little away in their interviews, he isn't going to criticise the team publicly. Yes its a shambles that we have been knocked out by bradford with almost a full strength team but if we were to put a run together until the end of the month all the wenger critics would quieten down.

Alot of people are still blind to the fact that we haven't had alot of money to spend in past transfer windows. IMO chelsea and man city are having much worse seasons than we are. Do you really think we would be in chelsea's position if we'd had that type of money to spend in the summer? Wenger has been the scapegoat for along time throughout this period but he doesn't decide how much money he is given to spend, we pretty much balance the books every window which should show supporters that we have very little cash until these deals come through.

How can Wenger be blamed? Simple, IT'S HIS PLAYERS, he chose and bought those players, and so it's HIS FAULT when they TIME AND TIME AGAIN, fail to show up. Fans on this forum, and EVERYWHERE, have for a very long time said, that our team is weak, with useless players like Gervinho and Ramsey, so when the team fails to performs, who the hell should we blame? Santa Claus? If fans and many others are pointing out the team is weak, and the weak players, and then the team goes out and doesn't show up, ERM HELLO, that's exactly what fans were warning about, and so Wenger get's the FULL BLAME. Huntelaar was purchased by Shalke for a similar price to Gervinho! So this ain't solely about ****ing money, with the money we even have, we can still identify and purchase quality players.

How much did Spurs buy VDV for? Look what class and quality he brought them. You don't need to always spend 50 million on quality, many quality players can be bought for 10-12 million, but the problem, is we waste it on buying USELESS PLAYERS like Gervinho, or Santos for 6 million, 6 ****ing million for Santos, lol.

He decides to continuously play mediocre players like Ramsey and forehead. He's the one that persists in having a weak squad littered with useless ****s like Chamakh, Arshavin, Squilachi. For 10 million we sure as hell could've bought better than Gervinho.
 
A manager takes responsibility for the team´s performance, He gets praised when the teams performs and he gets flak when the team does not. <ok>
 
This season, Wenger has strengthened the squad yet is struggling in the league again, we got out-played by Schalke and got 2nd in one of the weakest champions league groups, got out-played by Swansea at home with a near full strength squad and got beaten by a Bradford team with a full strength squad. These are worrying factors for a man and team that is going into its 8th trophy-less year. Instead of getting better, we appear to be regressing. Wenger is losing to teams he used to out-play. Now we aren't quite sure what to expect when we play anyone, even at home!

The warning signs are there clear as day. Either start looking for contingency plans, or let Wenger take Arsenal down further the premiership table and lose our other top players as well. Unfortunately, there is far too much nostalgia concerning Wenger. Any other manager would have got the boot by now, especially a guy who is getting paid such a high wage at £6m and managing such a big club.
 
When you play a player with no pace, skill or passing quality on the wing you're past it.

When you play a player with no skill, strength or shooting ability up front you're past it.

When you keep making these two errors even after it's patently obvious those two players can't play in the positions you're asking them to, you're past it.
 
I still think he's a TOP class manager but he has definitely lost something.
Unless we strengthen in January this will be our worst Season yet under Wenger (cant see us making Top four).



We're playing this high line typical attacking style of football but without a WORLD CLASS striker it's just tactical suicide.




I'm worried that Henry will be the only January signing and that Wenger will let Walcott leave.(United are interested now)
 
Im feeling a bit too tired this morning to WUM so I'll give an honest appraisal.

I think Wenger is a broken man.

The constant selling off of his top players and having to scrape bargain basement buys for peanuts seems to have worn him down. While the gradual change in goals from winning things and challenging to simply making top four have eroded his passion for the game.

He's managed miracles to keep Arsenal in the top four but it would be in the best interests of both parties if you went your separate ways. Arsenal could do with a fresh young manager with his own ideas and Wenger could do with putting his feet up for a bit.
 
A87 for the first time in wengers reign I would have to say that this should be his last season at Arsenal if he does not achieve top 4. I would like to see pep appointed to pick up where Wenger has left off and this could be our only opportunity to get a world class manager in. Mourinho may be better but how long would he commit and I don't think AFC is really the club for him.

I love Wenger with great affection but even I can see he is running out of ideas and it pains me to see him sink like this. He is a great great man and I will be forever grateful for what he has done but I think it's time for him to move upstairs and let someone withh long term fresh ideas takeover the managerial role.
 
It's time for him to move upstairs to a nice cushy job for life. But who will replace him?

As long as we don't get lumbered with a Mark Hughes, Harry Redknapp, Rafa Benetiz, Alan Parde or Mick McCarthy type manager.
I'd like to see Pep or Jurgen Klopp though I don't think they'd come to Arsenal. What about Bergkamp, How's he doing at Ajax?

But we spent a bit more than Bradford City tho didnt we. ?

It has NOTHING to do with money.

They won because they had the determination to win .

How much do you have to spend to get a team that doesnt miss 3 penalties i wonder ?

I honestly think he could buy whatever player he likes and it wont make a jot of difference.

HIM and his tactics /motivational skills , are the common denominator for the past 7 years.

The players have come and gone , with the same result.

Only HE has always been the common factor.
 
If our only business in Jan is to sell Walcott to Utd and bring in Henry then i think that will be the end of Wenger at this club

Theres only so many times a manager can keep playing Ramsey as a winger before you have to question his judgement
 
Depends what happens between now and the end of the season and whether the board give him the money to buy the players that we need. If we finish outside of the top four, then I think Wenger might walk anyway, having felt that he's failed to deliver on the the absolute minimum.

Word of warning :

Be careful what you wish for. Sacking the manager is not a magic wand for automatically improving the situation.

If anything, it would probably mean that we're looking at another long term project of rebuilding, new tactics, new coaching which could take a few years to come to fruition. Would those who are calling for Wenger's head be willing to be patient with a new manager ? Or would they be on his back, like they are with Wenger ?

My personal feeling is that Wenger is still one of the best there is - and given the money to buy the players that Utd, City and Chelsea would snap up, he would be able to build another title winning squad within a couple of seasons.

Can you not see how tactically inept he is? He's terribly predictable in every...single...game. That doesn't change with more money. His flaws are being exposed over, and over, and over again and nothing is changing.
