At the risk of coming over all DT (oo-er, missus) in my opinion we have all been indoctrinated in one form or another, we all choose to believe in one thing or another (whether that's a God, something else or just nothing) and our choices, loves and prejudices are all controlled by our most basic of emotions. How is it that two people, when presented with the same set of facts, could arrive at two quite different conclusions? Take authoritarianism versus libertarianism, or perhaps the so-called right versus the so-called left. How is it that one individual will follow one ideology, whilst another will follow something else? It is often simply because that is what we feel in our gut, else why does Mr A fancy Miss B, when Mr C thinks her a munter?

Took me a few reads to get that. As long as you are aware of your personal indoctrination and individual baggage, you can manage it. I think.

It's a complex subject within which there are no completely right or completely wrong answers, although there are certainly irrational, unreasonable and unpleasant positions. Lying somewhere just below the surface of us all ought to be the recognition that none of us are completely tolerant of everything, all of us have different upbringings and all of us are wired differently such that we are well capable of reaching differing conclusions when presented with the same external data etc. Personally, I get irritated by the liberal left social elite namby-pambyists that preach their own particular brand of tolerance and yet refuse to acknowledge their own often aggressive and hate-filled intolerance of those with different philosophies.

I agree. There's a certain poster on here that drives me up the wall with his hypocrisy. But we must continue to expose these people for what they are if we're to defeat them.

A free mind allows you to change your mind at any moment ... no it doesn't

I know exactly who you mean ... I will be having a word with myself later ... I will strip and kneel in front of my dungeon wall while others light a fire behind me and I will watch the shadows while pouring nail varnish remover over my testicles ... That's the discipline you see, the level of understanding that the master enforces

What provocations? If you can't control yourself, that's not my problem.

As it happens, you weren't even the poster I was referring to above but you're right, I don't particularly like you either.

Signing off this thread now as NUTS told us we can't hi-jack another thread. If you have any sense you'll do the same.

Swords/Imaz, I strongly suggest that the pair of you put each other on 'ignore' before either or both of you are banned permanently. I can see you rubbing each other up the wrong way again, and squaring up to each other in cyberspace is somewhat futile. It is plain from the many skirmishes in the past that there is animosity between you. Frankly Imaz, the suggestion that the two of you "meet up and settle things once and for all" is unnecessarily antagonistic and I recommend taking a different path.

For me, you are both interesting and valuable contributors to this board when you avoid this sort of stuff. Don't escalate things.

Yes, he was referring to DT, who took the comment in his usual good grace and humour.
