How many goals has Helguson scored from outside the 6 yard box? I can't think of any. Not knocking the 7 Championship goals he has got, he's strong and brave, and he's our top scorer. That still indicates to me that we're missing out. More than 6 yards out seems to be a no-go area for Heidar - he's had quite a few attempts and all have been found wanting. He's either ballooned it, sliced it wide or hit the keeper when he should have slotted it. Even McNuggs could have got one of those. Thank God we've got a midfield capable of scoring from beyond the 6 yard line. A true striker playing alongside Helguson and we'd be out of sight right now. Some on here say that Maynard didn't score before his injury as if his absence is irrelevant. He'd just joined us for goodness sake - he would have scored plenty with the quality in this team, and we're missing out. Rock on Heidur - you're doing a great job, but you need a hand up there to worry opposition defenders. The brave headers and toe-poke opportunities would still be there - there'd just be more of them coming your way.
Beat me to it H. Agree though Sparky, there is something missing. The problem is, to get a player that does what HH does and score goals from the edge of the box, we probably couldn't afford him. I'm one of the people saying that we're not missing Maynard as we never really had him. That's not to say I wouldn't want him in the team, we could be 10 points clear by now, but we won't know. It would have been far worse to have had him for a dozen games, got 6 goals out of him and suddenly had a void to fill. If Palace suddenly lost Murray or Blackburn Rhodes, how would they fare? I agree we woud be stronger wth him, but how do you miss something you didn't have? We've lost 0 goals in 4 games.
Hiya remote. Yeah, for one reason or another, I can't get on here as often as I would like. Not that I miss any of you old gits, but I've noticed Minxy is being led astray in my absence. It's a real shame about Nicky Maynard. He's a player I've admired for a long while, and I'm sure he'd be knocking in few for us if he were fit. The little I've seen of us this season suggests that we would suit the way he plays.
Less of the old. Git, yes, old, less so. I try to keep Minxy on the straight and narrow but Sparkey and a couple of others try to exploit your absence. In this division, Maynard would do well, possibly also in the Prem. Any team losing a player they'd spent a couple million would be agrieved, but fortunately our scatter gun approach to goals keeps us in the points. I'd rather have him available than not, but he hadn't become an integral part of the team. Visit us when you can and keep well.
There is another side to it I suppose. I expect you could argue that if Maynard was fit and playing, Mason wouldn't have got a kick and we would never have started a game with two wingers. Velikonja would have been loaned to Newport, with Noone, Kimbo, Conway and Bellamy brawling on the dressing room floor over who was going to get the one spot out wide. Laid back Whitts would have sat back and watched the handbags between Cowie, Gunnar, Mutch, and Kiss over who was going to join him on the pitch. Helguson would have tried to nutt Rudy over the targetman spot and given him a nasty blow to the kneecap. Ahhh..........a day in the life of Cardiff City and what might have been if Maynard was available......
I really can't get my head round this "Maynard is a huge lose" "We must replace Maynard" nonsense. Lets look at the facts. He turned out for Cardiff 3 times and was subbed in one of those games as I recall, although I'm open to correction on that point. (Leeds) So lets extrapolate his contribution, played 3 subbed in 1 over a seaon would equate to approx 45 games, subbed in 15. goals in 3 games Nil. Over 45 games - oh look NIL! Is this really a man who people are ASSUMING is a 20 goal a season striker in this division? We paid £2.75 million for him which works out at over £900,000 a game and we are still paying his wages, a bit like Fowler really. so when we get promoted we will be stuck with a player that will have already cost us over £3 million with no return, who we don't know will fit into the team and who has already proven he is not good enough to hold down a first team place in the league we will have just entered. And if we go and find a "Replacement" in Jan we are effectively replacing nothing, because that is what he gave us. I don't mind fans liking particular players or people acknowledging what a man has done for the club, but can we get real here please? By all means speculate on what he may have done but lets all stop talking as though his huge contribution left an unfillable hole in the team. There wasn't one and it didn't - end of!! RANT OVER!
With all due respect Snaggs - that was a load of bollucks (another opinion? ) How the hell can you "extrapolate" what Maynard could have brought to this club on the basis of the few starts he had before his injury? He'd just joined the club and as a proven goalscorer at this level - he could (and I only say COULD) have put away many of the chances that our midfield providers are so capable of. We will not know that now, and whether a replacement if one can be found will produce the goods is another matter and a fitting topic to discuss. Please don't rubbish other opinions mate - this is a discussion board not a witch hunt.
In a sense Maynard is a bit like Kenny Miller, loan striker and few goals but he was starting to look comfortable in the games I saw. We can only speculate about his impact over a season as snagg says, no goals in three is not a good average over the season but to base it on only three games is a bit silly as well. Based on our current league position it has to be said we have not missed him as we are maintaing (long may it continue) a top two placement in the league. I would also suggest the loss of a few defenders would have a much bigger negative impact than Maynard.
it was bitterly dissapointing to lose a player of his quality, let alone one you paid £3m for...... i have no doubt that if we are promoted he will have a big part to play, he didnt get a look in at west ham and will feel he has alot to offer at the top level.
And Sparks had a go at me for a clear, lucid and rational comment 2 days ago. Then again perhaps Sparks doesn't like "End of" at the end of comments. Xsnaggs must have too much time on his hands in sunny Baku. We were just starting to see what Maynard could do - he was getting close to full fitness after little pre-season and settling into the side. He was starting to give us the subtlety and movement to tkae us to the next level. 2 assists and his own goals would have followed. Hope he gets fit soon and can rejoin the battle soon.
Hello, hello there Bluey!! Whenever someone claims to make "clear, lucid and rational comments", I get very worried for them....... Hey ho - this is a discussion forum and I wouldn't have it any other way. Snaggs like anyone else has got a right to their opinions - the fact that it's the opposite to mine and they're talking bollucks has got nothing at all to do with it. End of!!!!! Someone could equally say that Snagg banging the "2 points a game" drum based on each set of 10 games is flawed and it doesn't matter when or where they come as long as we get there. ...but I wouldn't do that would I?...............
No Sparks not in a million years. I quite like the 20 points per 10 games philosophy though. It breaks the season down into manageable portions and gives more short term targets rather than the whole marathon. Just needs a bit of flexibility in exceeding target in one 10 while falling a little short in another as long as we reach 80 from 40 and have 6 games for the bomus points.
Just like to throw this in from Wales Online. Take a large pinch of salt as usual. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/footba...-to-buy-big-in-january-window-91466-32362758/
If we are going to go up we need a better , more mobile striker up front. Maynard had pace and could run on to the ball. Defenders are scared of pace. Maynard would have started scoring. Hes out for the season. We need better. Helgusson can battle but hes not much of a threat. I would play Mason or a fit again Tommy Smith up front.
