I was born down Bentley Grove, North Hull (1 of 8) spent my first 19 years there, went to Hall Road primary Hall Road Juniors and Welton High which were all in the same building before they built the likes of kelvin. Used to spend many a day down Bicknell Ave playing on the farm which went from Hothem Road North to Snuff mill Lane till it was compulsory purchased to build all the houses on, Albert ave baths at least once a week when we came out it was straight in to the small bakers shop opposite the entrance was always starving after all the swimming. When first married lived down Kimberley St off Argyle St the next street to Barry Nutter he was down Wyndham St, till it was knocked down. The main character of the time was Rolland if ever you went into town he was there but I dint go to town very often when bus fare went up to a tanner and that was just oneway.

There where quite a few "mobile shops" back then, seeling Pop, Tea, sweets and basic groceries. But I very seldom crossed the railway tracks, that seperated Bricknell to Priory, when i was a kid living on fairfax ave (went to Appleton Primary, then Wyke Junior school, before moving to my Grandparents on 21st Ave). I used Jeff Barmby's newsagent, and got to know him and his wife quite well (still have a chat if we bump into each other at matches). He took his lad all over for Football training (was always dressed Liverpool kits).And in those years used to knock around with Nick's Mrs ( when she was Mandy Telford who went to Bricknell School, with Peter Hird, (who lived on Chants, and I believe has taken over his dads crane/lifting company), and her mate Debbie Adams used to live with her. We used to go St Aidens Disco, and Wyke youth club.)

Jeff would sit and chat to my Dad in Greenwood. My Brother in Law and Sister spent years stood on the sidelines whilst their two boys played football at the same club as Nick. One went on to be a City apprentice. My Dad took him to Sheffield United for a summer school or trial and sat in the dressing room with Dave Bassett drinking tea. He said that it was one of those rare moments that you that you instantly like someone. Dave Bassett asked why my Dad wasn't sat with the rest of the relatives watching and my Dad said " How come you're in here?" Bassett laughed and said he got pissed off with the pushy parents. He asked what my Dad did for a living and they talked for about half an hour, before the players start to come back in. As he got up he said, anytime you are near drop in.
Life on NHE was tough at times, we had to take our washing in if no one was at home. Nothing could be left out. Bikes got nicked before the saddle would get cold. If you could not defend yourself you simply got trodden on. My Sister would bray anyone who started on me when I was a kid, but from about 10 years old it was look after yourself. The walk through Orchard Park was sometimes a nightmare. I was often left walking home from Shultz by myself, only to be chased by a gang from the courts or danes. The bastards never made it past Hall Road church. None of my mates lived on my end of NHE.
When I was in the Army, I interviened in a fight outside Greenwood, where two big blokes where at it with glasses. One was a pro rugby player who went in Cavalier. I used my training to stem the bleeding from his arm, but I couldnt get it to fully stop. About 2am, me Dad answered the door to two coppers who wanted to take a statement from me. He went mental after they had left, but then I think he realised that I was actually not a kid anymore, he asked about my training for the first real time.
We used to play dominos with "Blind Len" in the Gents Smoking Room in Greenwood, sat taking a corner, with a pint of mild under the table
 
I was brought up on orchard park. Lived down jenthorpe then kinthorpe. Went to thorpepark primary then onto cooper. Then lived on orchard park road for a few years. The area always gets a bad reputation but it's not actually as bad as people make out.
 
These threads are always interesting but tend to polish the turd that was being a kid in the 70's, I mean who would swop Sky Plus and playing Black Ops 2 now for 3 B/W TV channels and game of eggitybudge?

Me definitely. **** all that computer games ****e. Wouldnt swop my childhood for my lads. Kids watch tv they hardly play football now. Used to be games of 20 a side at Endike
 
Yeah, heard there were jumpers for goal posts as well, just saying no one seems to remember the hours of boredom broken by occasional moments of extreme violence when another gang attacked with stones and bricks, more like being in the trench's, and don't forget *****'s lurking behind every bush.

My Grandad use to spend his time in Spotty Dog Pub.

I use to get served in greenwood at 14 but kept my pint hidden out of sight .

Kids nowadays are a set of boring twats ... We lived in the real world of roller skate racing up and down 21st ave

Abc minors on a Saturday morning with girls in tow ..

20 a side Footy in the street .

Running the gauntlet of rival gangs , when the sight of one plod would make us all leg it and not dare to cheek mr plod ..

The days of noise from the kenpton , collecting footy cards that came with chewing gum not ****ty stickers ..

Footy away days ... Warm summers , day trips to withernsea on train with dad on a Sunday

Kids do play football but its organised junior teams, you'll never see 20 a side games in the park again now they've got FIFA 13 but I tell you what if we had had FIFA 75 in 1975 no **** would have been down the park rolling around in dog ****!

You still got your 150 Vespa ... I use to have a 150 Super , sod knows why they called it a super but there fetching decent money now.

I'm into Vespa's myself , bloody lambretta's go bang too often , especially tuned up..

I use to go to the Hull Hawthorns SC at one time ..
 
I’m looking back at the 50s early 60s we only just had TVs with BBC that shutdown at 10 pm and any games came in a cardboard box, spend hour catching sticklebacks and newts in the drains down cot road hall road and the one between King George V playing field and Tec field all gone now
 
I remember " newting" in the drain along cott road , didn't it end up getting filled in ? No wonder there's no newts left we had them away when we where kids just as our dads did before us ...
 
And we saw England win the world cup , in black and White

You young uns will never see England win it ..
 
The drains are still there they just run in concrete tunnels now the big one down Hall Rd had a small train running in it whilst it was being constructed we used to go out to the school gates at dinner time to watch the Forman kept telling us to bugger off didn’t take any notice
