McInnes' pride in confident City..

' Derek McInnes heaped praise on the confidence his players displayed in toppling npower Championship high-fliers Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Goals from Albert Adomah, Stephen Pearson and Steven Davies secured a first win in 12 games for City, who escaped the clutches of the relegation zone in perhaps the shock result of the day.

And the manager believes the performance can be a benchmark for his team moving forward.

“It was a terrific performance from start to finish,” McInnes told Bristol City Player.

“I felt we made the shape work to our advantage and defended with real resilience, but also displayed real confidence in possession of the ball.

“Kilkenny, Elliott and Danns did great in the middle of the park and we were never really stretched at any time, which takes a lot of hard work and organisation, and the players deserve all the credit in the world for that.

“In the main we dealt with a lot of their set-pieces brilliantly, Tom Heaton dealt with a lot of good deliveries and we stood up to what was still a tough afternoon.

“From where Albert Adomah and Stephen Pearson scored their goals you can see the desire to get into good positions and score.

“Last week’s result which was a more than decent performance was something to build on and we’ve come to a team full of good players and showed real assurance, and we need to keep that with us.

“Middlesbrough, to their credit, still kept trying to play. But towards the end when they started throwing a few diagonals and playing the style of football they don’t normally play, I knew we had them.

A lot of us thought me included that the line up was awful. I even commented that this could be a massive gamble and possibly lose his job. But he got that one spot on, he see's the players day in day out where we don't.

Not getting carried away, hard game to come on Tuesday but lets be honest they are all hard in the Championship so hopefully we can carry on the way it's going.
 
I'm just happy that we're scoring again and that we landed a win. McInnes should still be deeply concerned that we're still yet to land a clean sheet, as we've signed numerous players and still cannot solve our defensive woes.
 
It's a step on the road to recovery but we have got to remain focused.
The players confidence is fragile at best and one defeat could send us back into the mire- both in the table and mentally.

Not many games in the championship have 'nil' in them. Usually only 1 or 2 games. It's such a competitive league that anyone can beat anyone on their day. As long as we keep scoring and don't lose confidence if we do concede I'll be happy...
