Hi bors, Dad's Army was a brilliant team that regularly featured top of the Entertainment League consisting of players that were top of their profession. Irreplaceable. Only equivalent that exists nowadays to my knowledge is the Palace of Varieties in Leeds, where Olde Tyme Music Hall acts still entertain in the manner of the good old days of yore. Worth a visit, word of caution though, it is not an easy venue to find, off a side street. Corpoal Jones, sorry you are no longer able to assemble the squad, time for that eternal rest you have so richly earned, stand down Corporal.
I hope they pack an extra sausage for him in his final journey. The age of innocence that, with all the sophistication such as we are using here by talking to each other, we all pine for really.
Funnily enough just typing and you have pinched the very phrase I was going to use "the age of innocence". Brilliantly written and acted and as many contributors have said so much better than modern stuff which is generlaly pretty poor.
For me, the beauty of Dad's Army was that there was no one star. They were all stars and the perfect team.
My favourite was Mainwaring saying the Nazis wouldn't get far because of the Maginot Line. They've gone round it says Wilson. Typical shabby Nazi trick says Mainwaring. Priceless.
Still think one of the best lines came from the episode with the captured uboat crew. Uboat captain: What's your name? Mainwaring: Don't tell him Pike. Brilliant. Another one is where Mainwaring is drunk, and trying to find his way back into his tent when on exercise. ....Damned revolving doors
just an all time classic programme with script and acting to match. one of the great ensemble casts with no main character.
