Will we go down?

You are wrong. All newly promoted teams aim to stay up, and anything else is a bonus.

Newcastle are different as they had only just gone down the season before, and kept a lot of premier league quality in their squad. They also spent a lot of money on signings. Reading had a team brimming with talent, they still hold the record for points gained in a season in the championship.

We have come up from administration and league one, and as such our squad isn't anywhere near as strong in depth as these teams were. Yes we have spent money, but there is no quick fix and Adkins has tried to keep our core together. (As QPR are finding out, you can't just replace a whole team.)

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand your logic at all. You're saying if we finish in 17th you'll be disappointed?

No I will be happy as Larry trust me , wasted year though , why not buy the players needed before ?

This is the single most stupid comment I have ever read on this forum.

I'm going back to work, have a good afternoon.

Why ? We have not progressed , we have stagnated , why not buy better players ? Its a risk as we could go down and even if we stay up we will have to buy the same type of player need a year before .

How have we stagnated? This suggests that you think the team last year was good enough to finish 17th in the Prem

Got to agree with Johan, for neutrals, I consider myself as such, it's 50/50 maybe even 40/60. I thought that Southampton would be lower middle at the end of the season, but it looks different now.

I do suggest that as our team is not that different from last year , we have not shown a marked improvement have we ? The team is better but not hugely so .

Well I would say our team is pretty hugely different. If we look at the line up v Spurs compared to the final game from last season

Spurs - Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Fonte, Fox, Schneiderlin, Davis, Lallana, Puncheon, Lambert, Rodriguez

Coventry - Davis, Butterfield, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox, Schneiderlin, Hammond, Guly, Lallana, Lambert, Sharp

So by my maths that's 6 differences which is a pretty large proportion of the side

Marginally and it could cost Adkins his job and our Premiership place for not investing enough , worth the punt ?

But in the scenario you were talking about earlier, we had finished 17th and that was "stagnating and a year wasted".

If it costs us our Premiership status then you may be right about the investment. I personally don't think you can question the investment £30 million is a lot for any club to spend in one window, you could question on who it was spent

I dont want to go over old ground as I always get pulled up for that but yes is our team that different ? Is it really ? I dont think so , Ramirez is the one we seem to pin all our hopes on and is that fair ? Wasted window and wasted opportunity to buy players of real quality , not punts , quality .

Also I think we have improved overall quite a lot. I think every signing from the summer is a far better player than someone who was playing regularly last year (with the exception of Gazzaniga who is on a par to Davis, and Boruc who I haven't seen enough of yet.)

Clyne > Richardson
Yoshida > Hooiveld
Davis > Hammond
Mayuka > De Ridder
Ramirez > Guly
Rodriguez > Connolly

Think thats everyone

And £30 Million is chicken feed compared to being consistently in the premiership , still worth the punt ?

OK lets put it another way, though I'm not sure why I'm bothering in trying to talk logically to you. Why doesn't every promoted team spend, oh I don't know seeing as £30 mil isn't enough, how about £50 mil when they get promoted? This amount would surely mean that they will survive the season and get the money from the Premier League

Clyne Yes but he is still learning he craft .
Yoshida No they are both not good enough .
Davis Yes that was a good signing
Mayuka Yes again but did De Ridder play every game last year ? And is Mayuka that good ?
Ramirez Yes but we have to see him
Rodriguez Yes but still not sure of his quality

5/6 are better yes , but how often are they all in the staruing line up ? And are they truly premiership quality ? So I grant you they are an imporovement but its not dramatic and it may not be enough , still worth the punt ?

You can't risk Saints financial stability on a bet. I'm sure Nicola would risk large sums on a dead cert of Saints staying in the PL, but what if we don't. Important to get the balance right...invest in players but be sure you can afford them in the Championship. Will be interesting to see what happens in the January window. SFC is a business not a computer game where nothing really matters.
