I have just discovered that I can use my iphone's 3G internet on my ipad using a 'personal hotspot,' however when I connect it warns me that extra charges may apply. Can anyone knows about this sort of stuff tell me what these charges are for. Or if its limited to if I go over my monthly data limit on my phone contract?

Some more advice please. What is an iphone, 3Ginternet, an ipad and a personal hotspot? I thought that I knew what a personal hotspot was but perhaps I have been watching too much porn!!
 
Wonky. I live in the US where cellphone rip off is the norm. Here we have an extra charge for the Iphone service if the device is alllowed to operate as a personal hotspot. If you have an unlimited data plan, you could in theory set your iphone up as a personal hotspot and then have twenty PCs/Ipads connected downloading terrabytes of stuff. I'm guessing different cellphone providers may tackle this issue in different ways and this may be the reason for the warning.

Wonky, it depends entirely on the terms and conditions attaching to your iPhone package. I have Three's "One Plan" which includes unlimited data (in the UK). I can use my iPhone as a personal hotspot for an iPad without any further charges. However, some providers specifically bar "tethering", to use the lingo, and others do impose a charge irrespective of whether you are within your monthly allowance or not. So you just need to check the details of your current contract with your provider. <ok>

[Edit] I was going to add that the situation is different in the US, and the warning message is probably geared to US contracts. Just as BWOD has said. <ok>

Discovered that it relates to tethering (as you say robbie). On phone contracts before September 2011 (which mine is) tethering isn't standard and it's £1 for each day you use it. Getting a new contract in the new year and tethering comes with the contract as no extra charge so I think I'm sorted. Thank! <ok>

I know what you mean! <laugh> I got a fairly simple phone from AT&T over the summer as I was in the states for a month and I decided it would be useful when staying with my family over there which I do fairly occasionally.

I got a phone that did essentially nothing but call and text. It doesn't have a camera or any of the additional stuff and the whole thing, including something e1quivalent to pay as you go, cost me $70 (£40-45?). I could get something that allowed you to take photos and play snake (a must on the simple phones in my opinion) for half of that in the UK, no problem.

Good to hear. <ok> Got family in Texas and the last I heard of a hurricane near them was Hurricane Rosa (I think) Did nothing really in their area except snap a telephone pole in three (which managed to stay up right using the collapsed middle bit for support).
