    The whole exercise smacks of utter cynicism to me. Either:

    a) he knows he will be banned and kicked out of the International Team, and is therefore pre-empting the decision in order that his wikipedia page will always show he 'retired' rather than was sacked';

    b) he knows that the FA can't ever make any decisions, relying instead on 'public opinion', and so having loads of sympathetic media reports appearing ont he morning of his trial will make them less likely to punish him;

    c) his lawyers have told him that if he makes a gesture like this, the FA will let it go at that, saying that he has 'been punished enough'.

    Whatever happens, don't be deluded into thinking that Terry won't suddenly make himself available again in a few weeks when all of this drifts off the back pages. He'll miss the next two games, but when the next round of games approaches, he will certainly have put himself back in the frame.

    This is simply a self-serving exercise in trying to influence the FA board - nothing more.

    I think a deal has being done to 'save' face to every one. FA can now whitewash the whole affair, and Terry can disappear with his 'reputation' in tact.

    Hard to disagree with any of that to be fair.

    John Terry has retired from international football to spend more time with your wife.

    I have just been accused over on the Chelsea Board of 'loving all this' between John Terry and Anton Ferdinand.

    Just to put the record straight (because it's been kind of levelled at me here as well) here's my response. At which point I'm stepping away for a few days, before I get dragged back into it all again...

    *****

    I grew up in London in the late sixties and early seventies. Because of where I lived, the music I preferred, and the places I hung out, I ended up with far more black friends than white. Unusual for white kids back then. When the abuse came, you got caught up in it, and so I saw far more abuse and violence directed at my friends - and at me by association - than I care to remember.

    I hate this whole episode, and wish it had never raised its head. It disgusts me that a handshake, a few words spoken behind a raised hand, the tomne and intent behnd those words, becomes more important than the game of football.

    However, I'm well aware that the only way this will end is for the process to run it's course. Once the FA decide on a verdict (and any associated punishment depending on the verdict) this should be accepted by all parties without question, and all of the fans and commentators should then leave it. Whether it's that simple for John Terry and Anton Ferdinand remains to be seen, but I don't want to still be discussing this in a week, or a month - I want to get on wth supporting my team and enjoying being part of the world's greatest game.

    ALL true football fans should want exactly the same.

    ***

    Right - see you all after the case is over.....

    Totally agree.

    It will also fill a couple of chapters of his autobiography. I wonder who will write that for him.
