i'm a massive tennis fan and andy murray has become the first GB male to win a grand slam since the great fred perry after a thrilling 5 set match against djokovic.... i've been following his career since he played john mcenroe in an exhibition match aged just 17 about 8 years ago...,.

stayed up to 2.30 am to see the match and for me he should be nailed down to win the BBC sports personality of the year (not a personality but for sporting achievement) probably edging out mo farah who got 2 golds in the olympics.

the match itself was thrilling, the best final since that epic nadal federer match in 2010 (?) - two players giving everything to the cause, at times the tension spilling over but overall the match was played in good spirits. murray controlled the first 2 sets and won 7-6, 7-5 but djokovic dug deep and refused to be beaten, raising his game to win the next 2 sets 6-2, 6-3, taking the game to a final set, which he seemed to collapse in, with murray sensing it was his day. final set 6-2.

in an age with supremely gifted individuals like djokovic, federer and nadal, this achievement cant be underestimated - if he was born 20 years earlier he would have won 5 grand slams by now.....<ok>

If he'd lost todays headlines would have been about Scotlands Andy Murray. Today he belongs to all of us. <ok>

Terrific achievement by Murray, especially when pegged back from 2 sets ahead. That shows something about his character. I hope he can go on from this and take more Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon.

Yes, choosing Sports Personality of the Year will be the toughest ever. I'm sure we can all name at least 6 deserving winners.

CCR - to me it doesn't matter which part of the UK they are from, they are winning for all of us as were the Olympians and Paralympians. Well done all - by God we needed all of their success!!!

As for Colin, we won't need the officials' help to beat his sorry band on Saturday. Just hope the ref isn't as bad as the bent t~at who reffed Wales game on Friday.

surprised no-one apart from BFB has taken this thread seriously. andy murray is the best tennis player we've had since perry, a driven individual who has worked his way to the very top of the game, i dont give a monkeys whether he's scottish or british.

without winding up......andy seems a nice fella and fair play 2 beat best u got 2 b on top of your game and seems andy is in the form of his life......tbh its nice 2 see someone 2take a dream and grab it with both hands and make it happen.

Murray is from Dunblane and would have been about 14 at the time of the massacre, I believe.

I stayed up to watch the match and it was one of the incredible British sporting moments IMO.
Djokovic is one of the best players to have ever played and at times he played like it. Murray won on merit though, he was outstanding. The amount of balls both of them get back in play is just unbelievable, I've never watched a match where both players returned so many shots that would have been 'winners' in just about any other match.

I do feel a sense of being British and with that do enjoy seeing Brits do well v the rest of the world. His story, 4 previous gs loses, best player never to have won a slam etc etc would have interested me wherever he was from, but for me his win was the icing on the an incredible British porting cake this summer.

Didn't enjoy the 7am alarm for work on Wednesday morning though.
 
the dunblane massacre was in 96, murray was born in 87, he has never used it as a sob story and instead he says he was too young to really remember or know what went on.

agree steve, i thought djokovic, for all his pure technique, would never reach the real top of the game.... how wrong could i be! these big 4 players, which murray can consider himself a part of, are bringing the best out of each other and its tennis fans like you and i who reap the benefits.....<ok>

its typical, and very sad, that some people instead choose to whine about the 'british or scottish' issue though, not helped by people like connery who have no place to be making such statements.

i suppose the real reason i admire him is that if you read any article about his upbringing, he was as dedicated to his profession as it comes, insisting on moving to the sanchez casal academy that nadal trained at, at the age of 15 - and it proved to be the making of the guy. i sensed that he had something special about him when he reached the 3rd round of wimbledon in his first ever grand slam tournament aged 18 or something.

hopefully this is will be only the first of many future grand slams........<ok>
