Playing 4-2-3-1 at home.

Defoe up top playing as the lone striker.

Rarely creating clear cut chances.

How long do we have to watch this crap until avb shows us why we sacked arry.

OR for the people that rate avb and believe in his methods, how long do you believe it will take before things click into place?

Just to say, this isn't a "sack avb" thread as I fully expect avb to be here for two seasons unless he really screws up BUT I don't believe in his methods so for many fans he has a hell of a job in convincing us he is an improvement on arry redknapp.

For some reason I find it hard to relate to the guy, he doesn't have much charisma or that humour that gives managers a bond with the fans, I just don't feel he is a spurs manager or someone that can inspire the players.

One aspect which concerns me most, is the lack of creating chances, as we're a counter attacking team but avb wants us to play a high line, so how can he turn is into a team which takes control of a game & breaks teams down.

He can't achieve that over night, nor can he allow us to have crap results/performances while he trys to make changes, so how do fans believe the season will unfold with avb, going by what they have seen so far.

Thats just how I feel but there is one good way of looking at it, we are 1 point better off than this time last season!

True, its just this 4-2-3-1, especially at home, why does a "tactical genius" believe 4-2-3-1 is going to open up teams at home with Defoe up front, is that his way of deceiving us and then blowing us away as the season unfolds.

Lets hope so.
 
6 points from 6 would be the only remedy for some of us.

We have conceded 3 goals this season and for me all 3 have been errors from players that should do better.

AVB is setting up right...he could have dropped Defoe and started Ade but I don't think JD deserved to just be dropped....I expect Ade to start next match.


Levy needs to give AVB what he needs...not AVB's fault.
 
I don't want to be one of those knee jerk fans but what I saw today was a bit flat. Lacked width, any cutting edge and creativity in the final third. But haven't we been saying this for a few years now? Seeing Jenas in a Spurs shirt was the biggest eyebrow raiser for me but that's a side issue.

Let's see where we after after 6 games or so. I think we'll know how our season is going to pan out then. Early days.

Sorry Dona, as much as I have gripes with Levy, he doesn't tell avb to play 4-2-3-1 and avb is giving off signals that he was/is fairly happy with the striker options so I feel that has allowed Levy even more "time" in not strengthening the squad.
 
I'm not kneejerking here, but I've already posted my displeasure at AVB's appointment. I wanted 'Arry to have a least 1 more season with us to prove the doubters wrong and put behind him the whole courtcase/England fiasco.

It's still early in the season but these dropped points could cost us later on, (as the silly dropped points did last season)but to me, the team seems to be unsettled. Uncertainty is currently surrounding Thudd, Daws and now VDV, plus the whole Modric saga, that'll spread like a cancer through the training ground/dressing room and upset any squad.

AVB is in charge and although it pains me, I will support him and wish him the best. This season for me seems to becoming a transition year for AVB to build his squad and mould it to his liking. As long as it reaps rewards later on and he's not sacked while in the middle of his progress, I'd settle for a top 8 finish as long as were challanging for the CL places the following season.

BUT, it's all too early atm, AVB could turn it around in the next few weeks/months and make us nay-sayers look stupid.

AVb's system of playing is not suited to the players we have, but it hopefully will be by the time that 1st Sept comes around.

Its not AVB's fault that the rat is leaving a ship thats not sinking

The system will work, as the players throughout the squad both existing and new adapt, but as I have said in another thread don't expect great shakes in the league this time around, its going to be a transitional year and we will draw many more games than we will win (or lose)

Aye, but where is the fun is always being "positive" or "glass half full"! if you don't believe in someone or rate a player or manager then if you make you're feelings known early then who gives a f--k if you're proven wrong!

If avb does start to show why 4-2-3-1 is going to bring us success, then maybe he can sit down with redknapp and the former holland manager (that tried it in the euros) and explain to them how it works, just for future reference.

avb did say recently his ideal formation only has 1 up top, so depending on how you view it, thats 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 but 4-3-3 would suit us more at home, so why not try it against west brom if thats the case?

west brom aren't exactly an attacking force, so why do we need two defensive midfielders and lack of support for Defoe?

Really think it was 2 DM's because of a paucity of other playing options, the only other possibility would have been Carroll alongside Sandro and whilst an exceptional talent, don't think he's ready for a full PL debut yet
 
I'm not going to pull the tactics apart this early in the season, despite some odd changes, but I thought Verts looks a very good player and Defoe tried very hard not to be greedy, not sure if that's good or bad.

Verts did look very good and composed, especially when he went on that run from the back, and then tried to hit the birds above with the final shot! would have been a great home debut goal.
 
The tactics mentioned may well work, but not with Defoe as our lone striker. To play this formation we need the quality in every position.

The problem is that we don't have the creative player we need that compliments the protection we are currently implementing with the 2 holding midfielders, therefore it doesn't work. In addition, Defoe being the line striker is another huge downfall.

Those 2 missing pieces of the puzzle are catastrophic at the moment. All the possession in the world and dominance is not enough if we can't punish teams when we're attacking.

We are in desperate need of modric's replacement and a another killer CF. - Ade should have started, that would have helped. but probably still wouldn't have been enough, as we wouldn't have been able to create the opportunities from midfield due to the lack of a playmaker.

without the playmaker, the tactics are completely redundant. We need real top quality to make this work. As of yet, we aren't in a position to threaten other teams as we are too weak and not set up correctly to make the tactics work.
 
The main issues so far for me have been(and who's fault):
JD not being suited to lone striker(Levy)
No creative midfielder(Levy and Modric)
Wasting our wingers by making them switch(AVB)
A couple of defensive nightmares(the players)
VDV/Sig not getting close enough to Defoe(AVB or the players, not sure)

I felt AVB should've seen Lukkaku making mincemeat out of Gallas in the second half. Also, Livermore should've been the players to make way for Sigurdsson as Sandro's far better at breaking up play, Jenas and Jake were simply ineffectual at breaking up West Brom as we gave them chance after chance.

Totally agree. How Gallas still even has a Spurs shirt, yet alone the Captains armband is beyond me! Livermore is not good enough to play the single holding midfield role; with Sandro far better. Strange decision there. Bringing on Jenas just allowed them to stroll through the midfield... so nothing new there regarding JJ. Why can't we shift this guy out? Grrrr!!!
 
I think them signals are for the press,he does not wish to come across like he is already at loggerheads with levy over transfers.

Levy knows what we need as do you and me...get your money out Levy!

As for the formation....it is one that is with us to stay I think...and it is one we need to get used to..the current crop are obviously needing time....the fact that he plays a box to box like Jenss proves this...system then players for AVB.....do Levy needs to back the plan.
