It's the ENIC way, some people think ENIC/Levy are great, I don't. I think they're ok, but compared to the owners of Chelsea and City, they're poor, literally and metaphorically.
I'm absolutely all for running the club properly - but there comes a point where you have to introduce a bit of quality (and a bit of money) to become a bit more successful and therefore earn a bit more money.
Completely disagree about the Chelsea and City analysis. They've had fantastic success under their chairmen, particularly Chelsea and I have no doubt whatsoever they'll still be around in 50 years time, certainly for the foreseeable future. Incidentally Leeds and Pompey are still around. No major English club has gone out of existence in the past 100 years AFAIK. Chelsea and City might not be doing so well in 20 years time, but at least their fans will have seen them win the Prem. We haven't, in fact we haven't even come within ten points of doing so. If I live another 30 years, I doubt I'll see us match the success that Chelsea have had during the Prem era, and that I expect City to have as well. Jam tomorrow is all very well. But I much prefer jam today, sometimes tomorrow never comes.
I think its fair to say we're all a little hacked off with our situation... doesn't help matters that United just agreed to sign Van Persil either!
I'm as frustrated as the next supporter about signing additional players, but many of you talk as if we have signed nobody and spent nothing. You also seem to want us to commit financial suicide in order to possibly compete with clubs that make no attempt / have no need to match spending to income. We are guardians of this club to the next generation. We will not be thanked if we go chasing dreams now with unsupportable budgets that can only be balanced if some oligarch baled us out. The additional CL revenue is often mentioned as some holy grail but many of the clubs that we are supposed to compete with spend more than can be generated even with that. So yes, I want a striker as much and more than the next man, but we should never forget the risks we take if we destroy our wage structure to do so.
I don't think anyone on here has ever suggested we commit financial suicide and start spending money we don't have. We were prepared to give Adebayor an offer way above our previous wage ceiling yet that wasn't good enough for him at his age so it proves we have money in the bank if the players are prepared to come to Spurs. The problem is too much greed in the game by players and agents. If the stories in todays papers are true, Real Madrid appear to have accepted defeat and will match Levy's asking price for Modrid at around £40m and he'll be gone this weekend. If this is true, surely there must be some of those funds available for AVB to get a top class forward we so desperately need? If not, why not!?
Bit of both to be honest Spurf....even potential signings have mentioned Spurs and words like 'negotiations','intrest' and 'valuation' in the same sentence. I think it is quite obvious that we have tried to offload deadwood at unrealistic prices...whilst wanting star players for....and this bit is what is pissing us off.....for just a few mill less than the asking price....it's happens on several occasions now with many proofs...unfortunately. However, this is just an observation...it does not mean I'm not backing the chairman in the grand scheme of things.
These quotes could be true, or complete bull. The player's agent, Oscar Betancourt has graciously kept the door open for a better Spurs bid, even suggesting that shipping Luka Modric outthe door might free up a few quid. Betancourt said: “The only solid offer is the one from Tottenham, who offered €16 million [£12.6m]. But the deal didn't go through because Spurs offered too low a wage to the player and if the wage difference is minimal he would stay at Bologna. “Tottenham could raise their offer if they sell Modric and in that case the deal could be done, otherwise Ramirez will stay another year at Bologna. We also talked with Liverpool but nothing more. “Inter? They are interested in the player, but can't afford a cash offer similar to the English clubs. “The Nerazzurri would wish to include some players in the deal, but Bologna only want cash, also because of the arrangement with Penarol [Ramirez's former club] who receive a percentage if the player is sold.” But that does sound like a typical spurs bid for a talented foreign player, similar fee to modric and berba, its within our range and we all know the wage cap we have.
as we've already bid for him and he's clearly cheaper than Moutinho, i think it's likely we'll go back in and tie that deal up once the modric saga is over.
