Pork Pies!

Serious question.
Where can I get a decent pork pie?

One with meat and jelly in like the old days.
Not the processed compressed paste they all seem to be now.

Got some of Asdas crispy bake ones last night on recommendation, pastry was nice, the actual meat paste wasn't to bad taste wise.
But was still compressed paste.

Somewhere must still supply "proper" pork pies?

Last time I had a decent pie was years ago from a little butchers in Thirsk before the races.
 
do not like Pork pies, but what about proper Melton Mowbrey ones, its law now that they have to have been made in Melton Mowbrey to carry the Melton Mowbrey mark of approval, so its as close as you are going to get i think to a good one. (not a clue where to ge them from though).

There used to be a butchers in Blyth that done them years ago I believe, main street just down from the big co-op, middletons or something it was called, but im not even sure if its there anymore never mind if they do good pork pies. (just checked google maps and its now called Dicksons traditional Pork Butchers, but i have no idea how good/bad the pies are.)

just rwad Dicksons is a big chain of butchers (the one it was was not) so meh you can get them everywhere by the sounds of it (i have lived on Teeside for 10 years so never heard of Dicksons)

The Melton Mowbray ones I have tried are no better than the cheaper ones.

I'm not bothered paying a bit more for proper meat ones.
It just seems they all use the same way of processing the paste.

I get my son the Branston 4 packs for his bait, he seems to like them. (All I can taste is the Branston. :p)
 
In my opinion the best butchers shop in the world is Rothbury Family Butchers where they make all their own sausages etc. and also pasties, sausage rolls as well as proper pork pies. I have also had lovely sausages, pies and pasties from Carters in Bamburgh.

No, I am not on commission!

Where is Rothburys?


I have to go pick up the older boy from Darlington in a minute, I'm tempted to keep going to Thirsk just for the sake of it. :p
Problem is I will catch all the traffic by the time I collect my son.
To make it worthwhile I would have to buy a pile of pies. :)

Sorry, I thought everyone in the world knew where Rothbury was, after the tragic Raoul Moat saga.

It is a lovely town in the Coquet Valley, a bit far from Sunderland unfortunately, but if you fancy a day out in Northumberland I can recommend a visit.

I thought Rothbury was the butchers name. <blushing>
 
A guy I worked with year's ago told me his father worked at a factory that made 'Pork Pie's' and mentioned that if I knew what the content's (put in them) consisted of I wouldn't eat one again!!

Didn't go into detail, unfortunately, but I don't think he needed to.

Wouldn't put me off mate.
I love black pudding, white pudding and Haggis.
The only things I struggle with is liver and kidneys just don't like the taste. :p

Black pudding in a fry up, that i do miss, you can't get that here.

Soft Roe was another fave of mine, lightly battered and fried.

Kidney's I'll eat, but not Liver.

Did Darlo there and back in under the hour. :p (Just put Shells profits up again :) )
The traffic heading South was getting thicker so decided to give Thirsk a miss. :(

So Dicksons here I come.
Have to go into the City centre anyway to renew my photo license.

It used to be that way years ago, but having worked in a factory that supplies M&S, Sainsburys etc, I can tell you it's all proper meat now. Same with sausages, they use the pork shoulder because it doesn't look nice as a joint (though you can buy it in some places now), plus a bit of pork fat, seasoning and maybe rusk. Lovely grub, get it down yer!
