We reportedly had 12 mil to spend on transfer fees, and i would say butterfield will be no more than a 1mil (bargain of the century)! I dont know if transfer kitty will have taken a knock for the compo for hughton and his staff though... You're right with butterfield, he will be the Hoolahans type and will be his long term replacement.
Colin's always said he wants to keep Snoddy until at least January, Snoddy's admitted he might stay even if he doesn't sign the contract and the bid's been rejected. Think you lot are getting very cocky for no reason.
12m minus about a mill for butterfield and 4m for davis (if we get him) leaves 7m and for me that should be thrown at anita (of similar). He can play defensive mid and left back! Both posituons we need to cover. If you dont agree dont go nuts at me lol, its just I feel this is one of the most important positions in football atm and as I said earlier, last season our defence took a lot of flack that should have been aimed at the holes in the middle of the park. Im not having a go at fox, howson, crofts, johnson etc because they did us proud, but they are none of them quality defensive mids.
He is a right winger. Since Colin came in he has been playing on the left and in the hole behind the striker and while he hasn't done badly he is far far better on the right hand side. He is both footed so can cross quite comfortably on his right foot
Simon, were not being cocky or anything. You can clearly see in warnocks statement that he's admitting that Snodgrass's head has been turned and once we meet the valuation he will be off. there were even rumors fluttering around he's handed in a transfer request though which has been rejected, though I don't know how true that is. I personally am not expecting him here as i don't think we will meet the valuation but we shall see...
i agree with this, although being the greedy beggar i am, i would like both. i really can't see us being able to compete for anita's wages or transfer fee though, so we will have to look elsewhere for a DM
I think it's a bit misleading to talk about £12M for TRANSFERS. My understanding is that that figure is available for "squad strengthening", which includes all the extra costs associated with bringing an additional player in. So even if Butterfield only cost £1M in compensation, his wages and associated other costs have to be added in. Likewise with Whittaker. In addition. if Chris Martin were to stay, his wages etc. would have to be paid in full instead of in at least part by a loan club. Truth is, we don't know exactly how much is available; the best guide is to remember that whatever it was it wasn't enough to satisfy Paul Lambert, so the idea of splashing out a sum like £6M plus wages on a single player is completely unrealistic IMO.
I'm pretty sure its 12mil for fees, wage budget was increased by a further 10mil. That's where the whole budget was increased by 10 mil. Our fee budget was increased by 2mil this summer.
OK, I stand corrected. But that extra £10M for wages includes the extra costs of current players with new contracts, and any increase paid under existing contracts for staying in the PL, plus bonuses, etc. etc., plus additional back room staff, and so on. So I stand by my last sentence about £6M being unrealistic for a single player.
I would say it is and it isn't, it really depends on our other transfer business. Were we to spend 6mil on one player then wouldnt expect much more, if we sign Davies I would expect him to be our biggest fee which would be around the 4mil mark. It will be interesting to know how much leeds value Snodgrass cause you see all these values bundled about but the majority are unrealistic!
I know we did well last year on a limited budget but we did still spend a fair bit 8-9m? I just dont want us to be too cautious like when worthy was in charge and end up buying players who are the same as what we already have and not actually improvments. I know butterfield is a supposed (i dont know much about him) coup but if we have money to spend I think it needs to be spent. I know we dont want to panic buy but itd be a shame if we didnt take the opportunity to get in some real quality in.
I think most of the numbers being banded around about snodgrass are a bit wide of the mark, don't think 5 million up front is a figure I'd trust, maybe 3? Colin's after a bidding war, not sure id be mega happy paying over the odds
I would say £3.5M to £4M would be about right and that would leave us the remainder to go after CD from Brum. Wonder if Snoddy would prefer to be reunited with his former team mates, or try his luck (and get a better salary) in the West Midlands.
I would like Snodgrass to join the Canaries of course but where would we play him? Leeds fans say he is a right sided midfielder/winger, that is an instant replacement of Elliott Bennett. Now maybe that is a good thing to do and have EB as a back up for "off days" but it might also be detrimental to the development of EB at the same time.....just thinking out loud
I don't see any need to worry. The funds available to CH may be limited, but the circumstances are quite different now. I don't see any signs of undue caution, just good, sensible decision-making and a willingness to take a balanced risk if the potential rewards justified it (as in January when some extra money was found for "a bit of help for the lads" to improve our chances of staying up.)
i can't stand it when people panic about transfers or lack of them, or the order they come in. just let the manager do his job. we are not desperate for new players - new players would be nice but not at any cost. we don't have a vast war chest to delve into. and for the love of god, the manager does not sign players in order of priority. he will have irons in fires all over the shop and it depends on which one happens first. he is not trying to strengthen one area before another, its just the way the cookie crumbles
Anyway, as regards when we will see some more transfer activity, CH said quite explicitly that he was going to take his time and have a good long look at the squad he has inherited, who have all done well for us, before making major decisions (apart from Holty). In that respect things can be expected to hot up next week when they are all back from Austria.
I can see CH using wingers a lot more than PL did so having 2 out and out wingers in EB and Pilks won't be enough. We need atleast one more and Snoddy is perfect as he can play on either side.
