Try turning the light on, then the heaters, you will feel a lot better.

I hope you don't mind me joining in, but the FA cup final's 2008 biggest disappointment was the awful all blue strip. We should have played in Blue shirts White shorts and Red socks.

The fact that we used it for the whole following season, was simply too much.

Southampton should be playing in red and white stripes, especially this season. I didn't realise the shorts were red too, what about the socks, are they red as well?

Yes the socks are red with 4/5 bands of hoops.

I thought the whole point of the plain shirts was to enhance the sponsors logo which doesn't stand out well on the stripes?

Well to me after following saints for over 40 years now ,it's wrong our tradition is red and white strips and should remain so ,the sash argument is invalid as was a one off to celebrate an anniversary ,maybe I'm old fashioned and stuck in my ways but hey my prerogative , can,t understand why people got personal again over a simple question based on choice ,does not bode well for coming season when things get bumpy

Cortese hasn't moved our club to Milton Keynes...shirt design is ephemeral. May be stripes again soon. I expect the remit to the shirt designers was to produce a different look for our return to the Premier League but to include red and white. That is what they did. Personally I have always thought stripes are a bit common...look at Newcastle. The real thing to worry about is our form this season.

The thing for me, is that I don't think we are making a permanent switch. I think the club are trying to make things different enough to give them some commercial benefit. I have no problem with them making a change for a season or two so that fans don't think "oh well, I have last season's kit which is similar so I won't buy another one yet" and they make some more money. People don't have to buy, it is a choice.

As for "how far", well of course I wouldn't accept a change of colour to blue or green or whatever; we are Southampton and we sing "come on you reds". I liked what we did with the sash, as it gave us something different for a season to celebrate an anniversary, and then we returned to stripes.

If the club had announced that for all future kits, we will not have stripes, I would express my concern, however for a change for one or two seasons, I like it. I was a lot younger then, but I don't recall all this fuss over the Patrick kit of the early 80's and that can be called stripes if you like, but hardly Southampton traditional stripes.

It is for commercial gain and I have no issue with the club doing this.

I agree about the personal stuff, not needed.

I don't fully agree on the kit and I would understand if we had gone away from red and white (albeit only a little white), but the 80's kit with Keegan can hardly be called stripes can it? I thought that was refreshing for a few years.

I hate the kit so much that next season I shall be turning up stark bollock naked, with my chest painted red and white, my nackers painted black* and my feet painted white. Any girls who want to join me, feel free.

*You may not be able to see the black without the aid of a microscope.

Are the white feet a tribute in memory of Alan Ball and those white boots in the 70's???

White shins and black feet please ... get it right! :cheesy:

I have I missed something. I have the kit and as far as I can see it is Red with white stripes (thin white stripes but stripes none the less), so no departure at all. The only change from tradition is the Red shorts and socks, which I'm not bothered about to be honest. I think it makes a nice change.

So do stripes have to be a certain width to count?

yes lol, only benefit with new top is you could wear it out casually without it being seen as an obvious football top ,not in your face so to speak as stripes,my kids are confused though as unfortunately they follow Liverpool (i know bad parenthood) and they think ive changed allegiance too now lol

This is a very well thought out post.

How many people, who claim to like this kit, would be happy for it to be used for the foreseeable future, with no return to the famous red and white stripes?
