I looked at the accounts Lowe made just over 2 mil by the time he left, Crouch had lost just under 4 mil
Start at the beginning... Reverse take over..????!!! check what happened to other businesses. Paid himself a fortune whilst he mismanaged us.. Pushed through an open door re planning permission for the stadium, then couldn't pay the instalments, although given it was built for £32M and the sale of several high profile.. Richards, Theo for example. It must have been one of those mortgates where you couldn't pay off lump sums without hitting penalties.. and he signed the contract.. Employed more managers than we had in the previous 50 years.. Other than that he was great..
I reckon we can all live safe in the knowledge that old red cheeks follows our progress and gets fits of rage nowadays. I think he might just need to get his blood pressure checked as we enter the Christmas fixtures in the top four this coming season. woo hoo
Absolutely agree. With hindsight Lowe did a good job for us given all the financial constraints we had. He refused always to spend more money than we made. Maybe he made money from us, maybe he didn't I don't know. I'm afraid that the "Lowe Out" people caused us more problems and spent money we didn't have. A situation from which we were lucky to recover. With the clear exception of Crouch they were the real villains of the piece. Everyone here rightly has been criticising Pompey for ignoring their plight and getting more players in, well Lowe tried to do the right thing. He let Pearson go because we couldn't afford him and he played the kids because we couldn't afford higher wages. He was heavily criticised for that. But in the end, the ground, the training facilities and the fact of our relatively small debt is what made us a good club to buy. Without Lowe, there would be no Leibherr. Whats interesting is that Cortese is the same in some ways. He also refuses to spend more than we can afford, its just that we can afford a lot more now. I think Lowe's biggest crime was being called 'Rupert' and the fact that he was a business man first and a football man second.
Totally agree. Football fans can be very fickle. Although surely he could have found somebody better than Portaloo and Wotte-the-****?
On Lowe, I was watching a Fans' Q&A with Paul Sturrock at my local club, Southend United, the other day - this is what he said about Lowe: (Speaks about Lowe very briefly at the 6:00 mark)
You could argue that Leon Crouch got us into the mess in the first place by not cutting spending in the 07/08 season when the parachute payments stopped.
You could indeed, but then we'd just get stuck in a pointleses circular argument that would ultimately descend into childish name calling and harrowing overuse of the smiley
In all walks of life you get some things right and others wrong. Rupert had some good ideas from which we have benefited such as the stadium and the academy but he also caused us lots of problems with constant changes of managers and interference with the team as well as a lack of investment in players. He also had one hell of an ego that got in the way of the business. People are right when they say his actions made us attractive but if he had not made the many mistakes that cost us dearly we would never have needed a buyer. As things stand I have forgotten him and as for our dear near neighbours all their troubles are of their own making and there is no comparison in the circumstances of the two clubs entering administration. Southampton went into administration to comply with stock market regulations whilst Pompey just kept racking up the debt and trading whilst insolvent. In truth they should have been wound up 18 months or more ago.
Lowe is a twat. He ruined our club, but made us a very attractive ruin. The truth is administration is the best thing to ever happen to us.
