At a cost of £500,000 and with 1,000 police officers (many drafted in from elsewhere) the 'English Defence League' will be arriving in Bristol tomorrow to do a token rally against the creeping threat of Islam. The creeping threat that's so subtle I've not seen a single sign suggesting it's happening at all.

I live in Totterdown, home of the first ever mosque in Bristol and astonishingly haven't converted to Islam yet. So why have I brought this up on this forum? Because I know probability dictates some City/Rovers fans will attend. I'm not saying don't - it's your (I appear to now be speaking to an imaginary EDL member reading this) democratic right - just think about it. When surrounded by drunken skinheads, question when such a group have ever been right about anything ever, in the history of our nation.

I'm no EDL member and certainly won't be attending their march, the Gay Pride or Unite against Fascists march either.

However,it reminds me of that Luton Islamic march against our Troops and - 'question when such a group have ever been right about anything ever, in the history of our nation' - can equally apply.

Can't stand Nutters full stop.
However I feel about the EDL I detest that Luton bunch of Islamists even more.

Cant help but feel we have bought our children a whole load of misery to come.
 
The drawback of living in a democracy is we have to tolerate this kind of **** be it neo nazis or the Islamic nutters.

ps; the OP refers to the EDL as a bunch of drunk skinheads, for the record true skinhead culture is driven by a love of ska music from the West Indies and Southern US. Original Skinheads are probably one of the most non racist movements ever to come out of British youth culture.

I remember members of Madness, one of the ska-influenced bands like Bad Manners to really cross-over to the mainstream, often had to deal with the 'wrong' type of skinhead. The battle still rages today as well among the more clean-shaven folk around Stoke's Croft.

In what way, please elaborate? The EDL honestly think Sharia Law is a possibility in the UK. In human history, no country has democratically elected to have Sharia Law. Not Tunisia. Not Egypt. And they're Muslim nations.
 
Meh I can't help but disagree completely. I know quite a lot of Muslims and nothing bad to say about any of them. Obviously depends on the experiences of different people however. Muslim extremists are of course a problem, but one more likely to be solved by exposure to other cultures rather than being solved by a violent protest movement.. Foreigners and other religions that people don't understand always make an easy target/scapegoat.

Agree with Redprintt entirely, can't stand any extreme group that thrives on predjudice.
 
If Enoch Powell had been listened to during his lifetime then the country would not be in this terrible mess. Who was the idiot who started this mass immigration policy which allows anybody, seemingly, to come to live in the country? Was it policy, or just apathy on behalf of the population, that has allowed the nation.

Like all so called protests on behalf of this or that, you know that the major part of the group will be professional trouble makers bent on causing as much mayhem as possible without any concern for the cause for which they are supposedly rallying. Sad to say but I wish Canada was immune from these so called demonstrations, but we are not. Hope all goes well and no-one gets hurt as is usually inevitable.

And friends in Bradford, Tower Hamlets, Oldham, Southall, Burnley, West Midlands etc etc etc

Have you ever taken a trip up to the North West ? We did, house hunting, and we found the most gorgeous little town of Keighley that nestles in a crock of forest covered hills in some of England's most beautiful countryside. However, the place has been positively overrun with mosques of every shape and size, and whites are 'discouraged' from moving there. Ever heard of 'The white flight' ?
It began in American cities and now it exists in our own country.
Bristol is a cosmopolitan centre, and unique in much of Britain for being fairly tolerant of foreign cultures, which is lucky for those foreign cultures who live there. But the rest of England is somewhat different, where whole areas are being swamped with Asian culture to the ultimate cost of our own.
If you disbelieve that statement, please put some petrol in your car and check it out for yourself.

I am not advocating the kind of solutions that the EDL would put forth. I do not know the answer to the spread of Islam in Britain.
I do know that it is a far greater problem than many give it credit for, and it is not clever to just bury our heads in the sand
 
I've said my piece on radical Islamists.
For me it's not necessarily about the colour of anyone's skin or beliefs, it's also the flaming numbers coming from the EU.

Blair/Brown signed up to unlimited immigration from the EU.
Quote at the time from Blair 'I expect immigration from the EU to be between 5,000and 13,000 annually' - lol - it's turned out that we've seen upwards of 500,000 each year just from the EU. Let alone these Nutters we can't send home because of their EU human rights.

That's fine but WTF are you are any other clown in power (Cameron/Clegg) going to do to redress the balance.
Don't anyone believe some of the claptrap from some who say 'they're returning home'. They just send their money 'home'.

Went though earlier. Gas are about City about as well but OB numbers are insane and they are checking everybody on foot around temple way redcliffe etc and directing them to different areas.

The whole country is being overtaken by huge amounts of EU people the majority creaming the state.

This is costing us places in the NHS -Housing- schools the lists goes on.

Enough is enough the country needs sorting out before it is to late.
 
Went through the centre at about 3.30pm, loads of Police vans and uniform on view together with a bigger load of puzzled looking pedestrians and not a lot else....
 
The news just confirmed the biggest trouble was not the EDL but the monkeys that came to protest against them.

EDL had white and black members apparantly so it is not a colour thing as some seem to think.
 
The EDL are right wing ******s but they are multiracial which makes the racist smears crass to anybody with half a brain.

The real fascists are on the othert side. Intolerant of anybody who does not follow their mantra but tolerant of the utterly intolerant, even evil terrorists.
 
Both sides on this protest have extremist views - our democracy lets them air those views even if we disagree.
There are nutters in all walks of life, however the silent majority of ALL communities are decent hard working people
