Think you are missing my point, there are far more important positions to fill and we need to let someone go from within that position before we look at strengthening it further. We had enough quality in central midfield last season, we have strengthened it further with Butterfield...that's my point.

We have let a central defender leave when we were already lacking a bit if quality there. We have one recognised left back and we are limited to only two wingers. If adding another central midfield player limits us to strengthening other positions (due to limit of 25 man squad) then I would rather we strengthened those areas first.

Agreed, and you can also subtract young Jed Steer, leaving 24. So, currently, 1 squad place unfilled.

totally disagree. our main weakness last season was allowing opposition midfielders to run at the heart of our defence. this was because we lacked a holding midfielder. if mccann was an attacking midfielder i would totally agree we don't need him but he plays in a position that we have a major problem. also, there is no rule where you have to fill problem areas first. if a player comes along who is available and he will improve a position you take that chance to sign him. i've never understood some people who believe you should solve one area at a time! there is no order - if there is a problem area it will be looked at. its irreleavnt which order the signings come and its utter madness to think otherwise <ok>

Been looking through a few Burnley forums, apparently he has been playing a more defensive role this season but is also good going forward, could well be a good replacement for crofts. This could be a reasonably astute bit of business.

This is only a thought but havent Burnley been linked with Chris martin since the season end!? Maybe a player plus cash deal, which would be adding another midfielder to the books but clearing another striker leaving us with 4.

Now with butterfield playing numerous positions along with howson, and also pilks and benno are versatile I would imagine this could spell the end for both crofts and lappin, with smith and adeyemi off out on loan again!

I would be happy if we signed an experienced CB, a good solid LB, and a Striker who knows where the net is to help Holty out. I Really like McCann, he's the right age, he can defend, think he could control and shout the odds from the base of the Midfield. Let Hoolahan and wingers push on, but it wouldn't be a priority in my eyes. Unless we are going to start letting some go. Could see Korey out on loan again.

Yes, I wouoldn't be surprised to see those 2 released.

Great point re players' verstatility and it will be interesting to see how CH utilises that in the coming seasons. I hope we'll get a more settled starting 11 than we did last season and that our defenders won't suffer from last year's raft of injuries, so that they will get used to playing alongside each other - I can't even remember how many 'back four combinations' were used last season!!!

I would agree with that and I'm also hoping that-
    a. Vaughan will be fit more than he's injured
    b. Jackson will start finding the net again as he did towards the end of our championship season!!!

If Vaughan can stay fit, I think he can open up some games for us. It's a big IF though.

I don't think the problem is the CBs we have, but the lack of an established partnership. I would hope that this is something CH is looking to establish in the pre-season. My priorities would still be a LB and goal-scoring striker.

We don't have an experienced CB who has had a number of seasons at the top flight. We have very young players. I would like to see an experienced CB who can read the game and give a talking to to his back 4. I think Whitbread use to do that a little bit, but he's gone now. I don't think I wan't that Johnson though. I can't pinpoint who I would like in that position. Brede Hangeland? :p

Super, still missing my point. If we fill our 25 man squad with central midfield players and fail to address the areas in most need we could end up starting the season unable to buy a winger or left back because we have a full allocation. Unless we just don't register someone like Crofts but that means we have a player we can't use just picking up wages every week, or at best puts is in a **** bargaining position.

I wouldnt care about the order if we didn't already have a full squad.

i'm not missing your point at all but your point is a nonsense. i clearly said, all problem areas will be looked at but signings will come in no particular order. is it really that hard to understand? the squad is not 'full'. it will be trimmed - hughton has stated this but he wants to address who he wants first so we aren't short of numbers. this is very basic management stuff!

Right I know I'm going to get mullered for saying this but here goes....
Does any one else feel just a little bit worried about the playpers that we have signed and been linked with ?
I'm concerned that CH has got a championship mind set with who he's after?
These are the sort of players we were after last season when we had a lean budget, but I'm really disappointed that this window we've not been linked to better quality prem players or from abroad.
Lambo is defo getting his targets in at Villa and I'm just a little pissed off to think who we would have got had he'd stayed ! Rant over you may fire when ready !

What the hell is all this desperation to sign a "goal-scoring striker"?? Completely bonkers. We have two of the top twenty strikers from last season, plus one who if he stays injury free is raw talent and a final young international striker who is very fast and causes panic in defences and improving month by month- just needs to hone his confidence in front of goal. I'm not even including Chrissy Martin.

The last thing we need to do is go signing an expensive striker- would burn up our transfer budget to little effect on our attack. Sure, if a quality striker became available for the right price, I'd want them snapped up in an instant, but the chances of that are slim to none and the striker would probably go elsewhere for better wages anyway.

The only striker I can see us signing will be a cheap youngster who has bags of potential. That would be great

I think you're just missing the point of the board's aims at the moment a little. We don't have a huge budget, particularly not re. wages. Ultimately, we have to accept that we cannot compete anywhere other than for the best of the Championship, but given how well it served us last year, I'm happy.

Whenever you sign a player there is always a risk that it won't work out. The lower the risk, the higher the price of the player. We simply cannot afford to go for the sort of player that would set your mind at ease. Not at the moment anyway. Give it two/three years and you will start to notice the effects of the cash injection though. For the meantime, we just need to be brave.

Bearin mind that also, the players Lamberthas signed have been Championship players or from abroad! So no difference at all. As for the ones from abroad, I think they're a bit out of our price range anyway, so we're not really competing with him at all.

I'm not happy about McCann..has Mc in his surname which sounds slightly Scottish to me and if he is like 6 foot plus he is bound to be useless!!!

    Hear hear

Whilst I prefer an interchanging midfield with no set defensive /attacking roles I do feel a more defensive orientated midfielder is required. I don't think this will fully solve the goals against column as that was probably more to the system we played with full backs often out of position.

We do need someone who can read the danger a bit earlier, Johnson is OK but he just seems to lag a bit behind the play as it develops, he's not the quickest or sharpest of needles.

Love the sound of Butterfield, particularly impressed with his Spanish references to how the game should be played. Lets hope he is as good as he sounds

Do you know what super, I think you are just trying to wind me up. My point is not nonsense, just obviously not grasping it at all. I give up.
