Sorry, Rant over, I promise.

If you are not an Anderson fan, then you arn't a real F1 fan, "stepped up to the role" are you taking the piss or what !!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The guy has forgotten more than you will ever understand regarding F1.

Possibly agree about Jordan to some degree, but he's been a team owner and has influence, his approach is unusual I do concede.

I have the same problem with Monaco nowadays it's just not classy, just very tacky, it's all high rise flat's to fit in the dodgy rich twat's, I went years ago when it was still stylish and classy, nothing to to do with me I hasten to add, shook hands with John Surtees, Emerson Fittipaldi who actually wound down his car window, Jackie Stewart in the street, and loved every minute but wouldn't bother to go again under the current circumstances.

Calm down calm down, B'jebus. You can be an expert but if you can't present then it doesn't matter how much you know since you can't get it across. He's now adapted to do this and is very informative. I was actually sticking up for him but whilst you were blowing up you seemed to miss that part of my reply.

That's the entire point he's an engineer not a childrens TV presenter, its the bloody F1 fan or person seeking entertainment in this case that needs to raise their game, not Anderson, he's already an expert and a damned good one.

I agree. Anderson's arrival was like a breath of fresh air for me. I want someone on the show who can explain the stuff that's technical thoroughly without patronising. I wonder though whether those who prefer Sky and those who prefer BBC would split into young and old respectively; the older among us having lived through a time when TV was more edifying than tranquillising.

I agree with your previous posts too, Ernie, absolutely. And feel free to rant all you like for me. I'd join you if I'd had more to drink. ;) Democracy is dying, according to Newsnight and The Guardian tonight and we're too apathetic to give a **** .<grr> There you go, I can rant rant too ;) The wine must be kicking in.

ok ok I concede. Mumbling into a microphone as a car blazes past drowning him out is in no way worse than his current style of giving clear and concise information.

I feel I should agree with Max's excellent comment above. The only drawback is the danger of it sounding like a 'generation thing', which is anathema to me.

The whole reason Gary Anderson is so good is that he's just being himself, without effort or pretence: a real, down-to-earth, authentic geezer!

I also certainly don't want Anderson to dumb it down, if fact I'd like it more technical but there's a limit for what is essentially prime time entertainment. My original point was he was incoherent at the first 2 or 3 races quite a few times, I felt like I was missing out on what he was saying much like when the commentators talk over the radio transmissions. He or the producers have fixed that now so we can actually hear what he's saying first time :)

Being a bit deaf, I also found it required a real effort to hear what he was saying.

However, perhaps unusually for me, I felt it would be worth making the extra effort; and whether a result of the production team making microphone adjustments or that I became acclimatised to hearing him on TV, I've actually found myself listening intently to the content of what he's saying –something I have rarely found myself doing with motor racing commentaries.

In my opinion, he's probably the best 'technical' man ever to be included in a commentary team. Well done BBC (even if you got him on the cheap because he's such an easy-going bloke…)

I get your point about the 'generation thing' so maybe I should clarify. The BBC carries with it its heritage of 'Auntie' the educator whereas Sky is more about grabbing the supposed short attention spans of 'the now', so that's why I wonder, as a generalisation, if older people may prefer BBC. It may also be a natural consequence of 30 years of the 'Murdochisation' of media culture... Which brings me back to why I find Anderson such a refreshing presence on my TV: he doesn't fit the general trend.

I do agree that the 'generation thing' can only be a sweeping generalisation because I remember that I didn't fit that so easily when I was young myself; Sky's coverage just resembles more closely today's TV trends in general than does the BBC's. And with less money than its rival, I think it's better that the BBC ploughs its own furrow and makes more of quirky personalties like Anderson and Jordan etc, love 'em or loathe 'em.

Cheers, Cosi. I do find it fascinating the way they both present and distinguish themselves, and how they compete. Maybe I'm with the BBC because they're the underdogs and it's got nothing to do with age at all. Maybe they're not even the underdogs but they've just convinced me that they are... I mean, the BBC still has the gravitas and you can't buy that. But with Anderson the BBC have shown that they still know what it is and how to present it against the current trends. I'm loath to call it 'class' so let's just say it's their wealth of experience! :emoticon-0105-wink:

Edit: Incidentally, and I posted it back at the start of the season, they do it with simple stuff like colour: Sky's bright red and blue vs. BBC's black, white and yellow. These things send similar messages.

No Cosi, its not a generation thing, its a culture thing the entire nation has dumbed down, its all too comfortable being mediocre, or safety in mediocrity, if you prefer.

Where are the Anderson's of the future, can't see many on the horizon.

Ernie - - I think I should warn you that you are showing one of the first signs of a coronary - continuous rant about the state of things.

mind you - we are an ever growing club.
