As midfields of promoted teams go, Morgan, Cork and Lallana are a very decent 3. Maybe a better example to use is Blackpool towards the end of last season. They employed Matt Phillips and Tom Ince out wide. Despite thinking of them as wingers rather than attackers, neither did a stroke of defending and they spent most of their time running at defences. They resoundingly beat us up there because they outnumbered us in midfield and that allowed the wingers to run at us and tear up our fullbacksbacks. Man for man, they weren't superior to us, but Holloway's tactics and shape won the day. It's impossible to get the best out of Lallana in a defensive setup. We're lucky to have him and we need to maximise his utility if we're going to get anywhere this season.

Not the most 'impact' signing but sounds like a good guy and a good buy <ok>

Büttner transfers to Southampton as of today, Vitesse anounced the move of the 23 year old defender on it's website. The left back played in 2008 for the first time for the club from Arnhem. The player is on his way to Southampton for his medical check, if he get's through, the deal is done.

Southampton did have some trouble slotting in the Dutch defender, a bid was turned down last week but the Saints upped the offer and Vitesse agreed with the terms.

Büttner is excited about his move to the Saints: "The Premier League is a fantastic competition and i was very impressed when i came to the club for the first time. They have an amazing stadium, the current owner is wealthy and he is very ambitious."

    Congratulations on your new LB!<cheers>

I'd imagine it will be on the OS soon. Liked the look of the guy on one of the you tube clips, competitive, and looked strong, good technique.

Interesting to see where he would play, left back or left mid? If he is the business left midfield, then we will still benefit perhaps from Fox's delivery, and like Itchen north matt says, bring lala inside where he could be really cause some damage.

Good. The little I've seen of the player I've liked. Now for one of those direct translations:

Southampton has Vitesse with an improved bid Alexander Büttner convinced to let go. The 23-year-old left-back moves immediately to the club from the Premier League.

Büttner gave a very good impression on a visit to Southampton. Only the English club initially succeeded in establishing an understanding with Vitesse on a lump sum. The left was already taken by another year in Arnhem, after which he would leave a free transfer.

But that did not. Vitesse agreed with the improved offer that Southampton came Friday. Only a medical examination, the transition from Büttner for The Saints in the way.

Büttner looking forward to his English adventure. "The Premier League is of course a fantastic competition and I have my eyes looked at Southampton," he said this week in Football International. "The club has a fantastic stadium and a wealthy owner with all ambitious plans."

    Don't know anything about him...

Just judge him by his FIFA rating, like some people do... <doh>

Fast, agile player, bit short, just 5ft 9. But he is strong and has great stamina and endurance. Very consistent player and has a high work rate. Mentally strong and not complacent. He lacks a bit in technique, but can throw in a good cross. His passing is decent and he can shoot from distance. However, his tactical insight is below par. He still needs mature a bit in that department. Like i said good pace, great tackling, Man marking is above par just his height and his jumping can be a disadvantage.

I hope he's good. I can't say I'm as excited about this one as I am about most of our signings.

Goal.com who have proven to be quiet good with Saints, e.g Tadanari Lee and were the first to report Buttner have stated the reported fee is £6m, now i know that will be in installments but that seem slightly higher than i thought considering the first bid was around £2m. Sounds like an exciting proposition if everything is confirmed and sorted out.

Ha thankfully Goal.com is terrible, I'd be terrified if we spent £6m on this guy.

EDIT: Just had a look for myself. Think you misread it, the £6m bit is about Rodriguez :)

I'm going to reserve my judgement until I see him play. But he can't be any worse then Harding, so least we are moving forward.

I like Harding. Limited though he may be, he seems to make the right decisions.

From the little I've seen I reckon he'll end up in front of Fox quite quickly. And I don't mean left midfield either.

And I've always rated Dan Harding too. He's out of the reckoning now though.
