How do you give a penalty for a handball and not book the player?

Last seconds of injury time, you need a goal now or it's all over and your keeper's gone up into the opposition's box.
What do you do with your free kick?
Play it short, so the ref can blow the whistle. <doh>

Best team won. That said I never thought Italy would win tonight.

Greece got a similarly farcical penalty against Germany in the quarters.

They do like a long ball over the top but that just seems reasonable against sides that either play a really high line thinking their team won't lose the ball or have Terry in their defence. They didn't try to kill the game off either and made fairly like for like subs, I was jealous because as much as you can wax lyrically about Pirlo as he's the flavour of the month, they've played good football with a team that wasn't expected much of.

I love to see the pundits squirm. I love how they change their analysis based on the last time to somehow suggest that was always what they thought would happen. I love it that after declaring Germany the champions elect after facing Spain in the final, Spain almost didn't get there and Germany failed. I love the pundits declaring that England is rubbish and we now need to be emulating the German approach. Well if footie was that predictable there'd be no point in watching it. We can spend the next 20 years trying to become Germany (or maybe Spain) to find that (1) over the course of a relatively small number of games anything could happen regardless of prep and/or (2) Germany and Spain are better at being Germany and Spain, and maybe we should be trying to find out what we do best instead.

The Italians may have played quite a few balls over the top, but how many times did it work?
They were through on goal on so many occasions and caught offside unnecessarily several more, too.
2-1 was actually pretty flattering to the Germans.

How bad was Podolski, by the way?
Actually worse than his crappy song, if that's possible.

    I'm not. He did.
Never made it onto the pitch, though.

So, anyone else think Federico Balzaretti would be a good way to spend our newly-acquired Arab monies?

Balzaretti has been key for Palermo over the last couple of years and has been touted already this summer for a move to PSG, which I'm fairly sure he quashed in the end (or maybe Palermo blocked it, one of the two). He's definitely not a player Palermo want to sell in any case and I'm not sure we'd be able to compete with the money of PSG - even with investment - plus I believe his wife has strong family connections to Paris as well so it would be his preferred destination in all probability.

I'm not sure it would be worth spending the money to get him when BAE is doing very well for us and for me Rose is a promising understudy for that position.

PS: I bloody hate Spain. I don't know why, I just do

    Taken from the current WSC:

What Roy said: I want you to defend as well as the 1997 team did when they got a 0-0 away draw in Rome against Italy in a World Cup qualifier. There are no free games at this level so we need discipline. And I want you to play a mature game, with total concentration and be able to switch to defending sometimes like the great Holland players did in the 70s, but with more steel and focus, say like the classic Revie Leeds side. I would have preferred Jack Wilshere in midfield to be honest - be plays nice little balls into space. But such is life...

What Stevie G hears: Roam free and play Hollywood balls.

The headline is incorrect - it wasn't "faked" footage (it wasn't a CGI tear), merely a misleading edit. The BBC are just as bad on MOTD, showing three blokes leaving and saying they're leaving early, when for all you know they could have been going for a piss twenty minutes earlier.

But, as fans don't sign release forms when entering stadiums giving broadcasters permission to use their image forever more, nothing can be done about it.

Well as far as i am concerned showing a woman crying after Italy score, when in FACT she was crying earlier at her national anthem is as FAKE as you can get. Now that it has been outed we know where we stand.

There is a growing trend to show fans faces when we are watching a match and then we have close ups of the managers and close ups of players after an incident, long shots of the stadium, close ups of the bench and random players sitting in the stands. All very interesting for people who are not really interested in the match and have the attention span of a shubunkin.

Match? Yes football, you know 22 men and a ball; someone tell the directors that we are not interested in their efforts to get themselves into the Tate Modern, just show us the ****ing game.
