He's back on the payroll again--as a defence coach!! A Blue legend as a player--but do we need a defence coach?

People often asked what did Ray Wilkins do. What does Eddie Newton do, we already have an experience assistant grounded in coaching in Steve Holland. I feel a person's worth as a trainer isn't always just what they know technically, but how they impart that knowledge and make it stick. I don't not know much about Holland's personality but I do know that Newton and Desailly are huge personalities who's value as role models and communicators equal if not exceed their undoubted technical knowledge.

What other coach would JT actually listen too but his acknowledge mentor?

Strange you should ask the question about a defense coach as just yesterday I was reading the Chelsea staff list at the club site and it struck me both Di Matteo and Newton were midfielders and how much expertise do they have in attacking and defensive movement and positioning other than secondhand anecdotal.

DPB--I take your point about Ray Wilkins! As playing contemporaries they , no doubt will meld together well! Its easy to ignore the importance of background staff, but his name and reputation alone will ensure he's more to the forefront than background! He'll also have the respect of the squad, no doubt!

That'll be his frenchness! Brilliant defender and will certainly keep the lads in check.

Not sure that being a good player makes you a good coach. If it is a RDM appointment then so be it but it would be a shame if an abrasive personality came in and ruined the atmosphere Robbie appears to have created amongst the squad.

JT respects him massively, can't see it ruining anything.

Far as I can see it's all speculation right now but it seems odd when we've just achieved the greatest trophy win of our history built largely on defensive prowess. I'd have though the current defensive coach should be who we stick with.
