A lot of his runs lead nowhere and he's totally ineffective. Surely he's played his last match for us.

Then he should have been warmed up in the friendlies. This is far too important a match to have even considered him. They deserve at least a draw. We've only had one f**king chance in the second half. The goal was a tap in.

the goal was 2 deflections and a tap in...Italy dont concede rubbish goals......this is not me being a tit...well done England for the victory.......but Ukraine were dire in defence...i think if the French game came last or even second then this group would look diffrent.

I shouldn't have started this thread about Rooney because I have sweet EFF all left to say about him. It was just frustration and anger that made me do it. I don't know what to say now about our prospects. France faded,Italy only won 2-0 against the Paddies and Spain left it late against Croatia. Germany looked vulnerable against the danes and I don't know what else. Totally cheesed off.

After that wonder goal, his place in the team is very secured for now. <whistle>

Italy tend to start slowly in tournaments - their last two World Cup final appearances came from positions where they were facing elimination in the third round of fixtures...although they'll probably be undone by Balotwatti being Balotwatti, whilst Borini and Giovinco had ten caps between them before the tournament.

Did you see any other England player close to the ball when he scored? that is what a striker does, he anticipates and gets into the right place at the right time this is why you don`t get average players consistantly scoring tap-ins week in week out.

Diego,I understand that because he plays for your team then you want to defend him but anybody could have scored it. Many of his runs lead nowhere and he lost the ball too often so be honest about him and not blinded by loyalty. What are you doing on the Spurs board anyway,do you find us more interesting than your own?

Just anyone wasn`t there though was they? sometimes runs draw defenders away from position and although they do not seem to lead to anything leave another player open for a pass (watch the game), i visit all the active boards like your`s Chelsea and Arsenal because sometimes ours is dead. I am not blind to the fact he is not a world class striker, unfortunately he is the only player at my club who shows any passion at the moment up front and without him we have no drive.

Sorry mate this is not how I'd look at it. I'd say good anticipation, right place at the right time, reading the situation, what would you say if he'd just stood a few paces back and just watched it go past him?

It looks like he can't win!!!

Tap ins should never be knocked imo, you have to 'be there' to tap it in. :)

Rooney missed a simple header and was clean through but over ran the ball and lost it too easily. I'm sorry but nobody should be satisfied with his or England's performance.

I'm truly baffled by why people expect a star performance after a month, he'll be needed later if we progress and needs competitive minutes to get up to speed. If this was Defoe (a Spurs player) I bet the attitiude would be different.

No it wouldn't. The guy gets away with murder *because of* who he is. Plus we haven't seen him get frustrated and get sent off yet... and the continental refs don't realise (unlike the PL refs) that they're not allowed to send him off. As I said before, he is capable of something special, but not often enough to justify his place (4 goals in 20 internationals!), and he's a big risk with his temperament so why take the chance?

i'm baffled as well,we will need him as a fit Rooney the best player we have.Don't agree with Vimlock, about him getting away with Murder. We need our best players ffs if we want to have any chance, even those who don't like him should realise that.Anyone who say's he's not one of our best, clearly knows nothing about football.

I think we should drop all our best players and pick 11 from League 2.

I think England should go with Carroll and Welbeck against Italy but Roy has already said that Rooney plays if he is fit. Seems crazy to me.
