    Hi All!

First post so please be kind! I was just wondering what everyone thought of getting Danny Murphy for a free? We need a traditional No. 8 and although I agree that he's not getting any younger, I think his passing is superior to that of Whitehead for example. If we're signing players as old as Upson, Woodgate, Owen (possibly) why not Murphy? Especially on a free.

    Thoughts?

Welcome to the site, your views and opinions are valuable

Danny Murphy has said some nasty things about Stoke's style of play in the last couple of years so it would seem unlikely that he would want to sign for us, and what would the Stoke fans think.?

Welcome and nice to see your contribution.

I dont think Danny is much for Stoke and I dont think Stoke supporters are much for Danny. I always argue that we are an aging team with no pace and yet we are always linked with 30ish year olds who have lost their pace! However, in this position we could get away with someone who just sits and distrbutes and a Danny TYPE player would be perfect.

No way would Danny Murphy come to Stoke he hates us with a passion. We need young talent not more older players. Top player in his day but getting on now.

I agree we need younger players not 30+ yr olds. Which is one reason I was dismayed by the sale of Ben Marshall and the release of (and non use of) Tom Soares. I wanted us to go after Darron Gibson last transfer window, we desperately need a midfield playmaker to go alongside one of Whelan/Palacios,Whitehead.

Now Now Stokie - be Nice. I know your feelings on Whelan and I suppose its all a matter of perception, I prefer him over Whitehead! I think we can agree on one thing though, that our midfield is simply not good enough. I would like to think Palcious will be good enough but we have yet to see him have a run of games!

For me, Palcious starts every game with another new midfielder and like the op says, Gibbson would have been ideal! Whelan and Whithead could by squad rotation players - at best!

The only place I would put Whelan and Whitehead are in the bogs giving them a good clean. They are nowhere near good enough for the prem, but to be honest how we play do we really need playmakers in there?, as the ball always bypasses them with all the big boot we play. Until we change our style its a waste of money buying a playmaker.

I think we do need a playmaker Ric, You never know if he's on the pitch we may inadvertently start to play football while Pulis's back is turned.

No - thats the point! We have to change and we have to have more players capable of distributing the ball!

A new rumour going around is we have had a bid accepted by Bolton for one of their midfielders. Possibly Eagles, Holden, Davies or the Korean fella. Wouldn't say no to Holden or Eagles. Ballack on a free? ;)

Eagles would be a good signing, giving us 3 wingers (if Pennant stays/plays) and a little more pace! Cant really comment on Holden and whilst Davies is a solid player and can deliver a good ball I'm not sure he would be a massive step forward - isn't he 30ish aswell? The Korean chap was pretty lively aswell!

    Ballack ? NOOOooooo!

Ha! Yeah I was just joking! Why not Owen Hargreaves while we're at it! Anyway...

Delap - Chung Lee is Korean and is a Bolton player. Ryo Miyaichi is Japanese I think and was the Arsenal player on loan. Wouldn't mind Miyaichi looks pretty lively, not much for Chung though. I just hope it's Eagles.

Yeah, why not Hardgreaves, so when we sign Micheal Owen we can play 2 Wilsons and 2 Owens!

Not much for Chung Lee either, but wouldn't mind of Arsenal wanna send Miyachi our way.
Eagles would be good, but Coyle will try to keep hold of him, so I think we'd have to see who else came in for him, or if he wants to play Championship football. Holden never looks too bad, but I, not sure on his fitness, I know he was injured for ages last season and kept cropping up on sky sports, so I don't know whether signing him would be any good, if he doesn't get a pre season, Pulis won't play him.

According to the Daily Star. . . West Ham have had a 4m bid turned down. But that is only the Daily Star.
He's played for Wolves for a good few years now, so you never know, he might turn down a move to London cause he loves the midlands so much!!

Southampton are in for him aswell! Wolves want 10 million because he has 3 years left on his contract, I think he is worth about 5-6 million. Eagles would probably come for about 2-3 million and lower wages so would think TP will look at that option first!

Our strength is in our wingers, we need their pace to carry the ball because we have so little passing abilty to work the ball through the centre. With Ethrington coming of the back of a poor season (never felt he was the same after his injury at Man City the season prior) and Pennant being both out of favour and incapable of behaving like a responsible adult, our strenghts from previous seasons could become one of our weaknesses!
