It was on the cards to be fair so saying I'm surprised is maybe a bit over the top, to be fair most of the guys at SCITK said he was leaving a few days back for the reasons now touted on media websties. I won't deny that I'm gutted, he's been our best manager for years and replacing him won't be easy but my article is more about the effects it will now have on the current squad. 1. - Potential arrivals - Vertonghen and Remy deals were both touted in the media and SC as "nearly complete" etc. Now we've lost the manager that surely would have been partly involved in bringing them in, will they now have a change of heart and look to join a club which in their eyes, has a bit more stability? Redknapp admitted his interest in Vertonghen to the media, so now he's not at the helm, I wonder how much of an influence he had on Jan's decision to join and how much it could affect the deal that seemed so close to completion. 2. - Potential departures - It always came across that Harry played a part in trying to persuade the likes of Luka and Bale (Luka especially) that they're futures are here, he was constantly in the media saying they'd be better off at Spurs and no doubt he had words in private with them. A lot of the players seemed to have a great respect for Harry and even SSN reported yesterday that they'd spoken to a few "un-named" players about how gutted/ devastated they were at the news which could cause them to re-think their position at Spurs as it's no secret Harry had his "favourites" when it came to team selection and therefore with a new manager coming in, no doubt some of the first XI players will be sweating about their roles within the team which can cause unrest/ panic etc. 3. - Style of football - With the bad run we had excluded, no one can deny the football played under Harry was near breathtaking at times, he allowed our players so much freedom it was great entertainment for all Spurs fans to watch. A new manager will no doubt have their own idea on how to play, which could disappoint the players if they prefer a more solid style of football as it's obvious to see they enjoy the "all out attack, we'll score one more than you philosophy" Harry played. Again, tantrums could flair and players can cause unrest if they're not comfortable with the possible new style. Overall this is a pessimistic view of things and more of "worst that can happen" scenario. Just wondering what the views are of my fellow yids are on this.
morning sos what you've put here is my biggest concern now, too. Moyes = great manager, but not a step up for us. same goes for Martinez. Really like both managers, but in reality we can't take a risk like that. Players in = could easily see a u-turn here. new manager will want different players, surely? players out = don't even want to talk about this. It's a hideous thought, unless we get a big name manager. Style of football. = probably my biggest concern. We're used to not winning much in terms of trophies, but at least we're entertaining and give it a go, by playing good football. If that style changes, it's gonna be soul destroying.
I'd have to disagree. I think, firstly, that Moyes IS a step up. He's far more tactically astute than Harry will ever be. Yes, a new manager may want different players, but who wouldn't want Vertonghen? And if it is Moyes, and he can bring Jelavic, how bad is that? Those who say that Moyes plays defensive, negative football obviously haven't paid much attention when watching Everton play. His teams are quite capable of playing attractive, open football. He plays to the strengths of the players he has at his disposal. I think with what he would have at Spurs, you will see the same attacking style, but with more defensive solidity, and general organisation. Not a bad thing, IMO.
Morning Roo I suppose I'd want Moyes more-so than anyone, although his style of football has never been breathtaking, Harry was never known for producing magical football prior to joining us, I think it depends on the players at his command to decide on how to play. I think Moyes would also be able to sit down and talk to some of the "superstars" and try and persuade them where their future lies. Martinez would try to keep the entertaining style of football, but his reputation may mean players will think they're bigger than him and won't be interested in playing for him and request a move. No doubt the new manager will have their own targets, hopefully they and Levy will have a chat and decide that the likes of Vertonghen needs to be brought in. Players out worries me the most I think, I'd be devastated if Luka left (who in my opinion, is the best technical footballer I've seen at Spurs) and it only takes for one to go before the others future's are questioned. The style, as I mentioned earlier in regards to Moyes taking over, will hopefully still stay the same due to the players we have, just perhaps the new manager (be it Moyes) helps raise our work ethic and works on the defence being more solid.
Agreed NSIS, the players at Moyes' disposal will determine the style of football played (or at least I bloody hope so!). The Jelavic situation could be interesting, IF we got Moyes in, I wonder if he'd go back to Everton for any players, Jelavic would definitely be welcomed at the Lane. Jagielka too perhaps? Versatility aspect would be a bonus. Don't think he'd be a starter though.
I'll lend 'em it But in all seriousness I see where you're coming from, the transition period COULD have major detriments to our plans for the season, hopefully the new manager, whoever it may be, can slot in quickly and hit the ground running.
At no point did i mention Moyes playing bad football NSIS, he's a good manager, but i just don't see it as a step up. I don't see Moyes taking us to the next level, that's all. People might suggest that harry is tactically inept/doesnt rotate the squad, or any of his other faults, but Moyes will have his own. correct, no one would say no to vertonghen... but who says he will want to join us now this has happened? Jelavic is very unlikely. it's one thing to lose your manager, but we won't have Jelavic join over the same summer, aswell. Besides, after the euro's his "value" will be ridiculous anyway.
Good point, his form at Everton and having 1 in 1 at the Euro's means his price is pretty much doubled already (got him for £7m didn't they?), so I presume you'd be looking at an easy £15m just to get their attention, probably looking at £20m though I'd say if Moyes joined us.
I really don't get the idea of a player exodus now that Harry has gone. After all, is there a mass exodus of players at Chelsea every time they sack a manager? It's a myth perpetrated by rival fans and a media content to sell our squad to MUPLC and the Chavs, without asking our permission (or, you know, the players moving to them...)
One thing not mentioned yet. With Harry gone,What about his back room team- Jordan, Bond et al. I suppose they'll go as well.
It depends whether the new guy wants to start again, or reorganise what we have already. I hope it is the latter.
I smile at all these people who make such confident predictions about what will happen to Spurs, we will lose various players and end up mid table again and all that. Right now we don't know who will be the next Manager therefore to make any predictions is to risk looking like a fool. Levy has continually shown his ambition at Spurs and is not about to let the whole thing drift away. Redknapp would have sold Modric, Redknapp informs everyone how difficult it will be to keep Bale. The fact is it is Levy who makes these decisions Redknapps presence or otherwise will make little difference to these issues
No doubt it's a risk but I've always said this was the best time for us to make a change if needed. I never thought it would happen and thought we were better served giving 'Arry a new deal but whatever's gone on for him to leave, the new manager coming in will get the opportunity to work with our top players with the possible exception of Modric. We need some maintenance done on the squad too so the new manager could well be given a decent budget given that we've been squirreling away over the last few years.
but the clubs you mention HBIC, are regular CL contenders who are always at the top of the table paying very high wages. We are that club who sit just outside, have some amazing talent earning half as much, and we are the prey of the vultures. add that to the fact that Arry "the man manager" redknapp has gone, and it's easily possible that we could see a few transfer requests and an unsettling summer. Our club is like a soap opera - Drama constantly. I didn't think that this summer could possibly have more than last year with the modric saga, but the next couple of months is going to be ridiculous!
The repercussions if there are any might not be so severe if you think that Matteo is taking over at Chelsea and he's not such a good manager. Mancini might be on his way and RVP could leave Arsenal thereby diminishing the strengths of our main rivals. Rodgers is totally unproven for the Scouses and well who's left? Newcastle and Utd don't count as they're always head and shoulders above. Let's not be gloomy,I'm looking forward to the fresh start.
fantastic point. When Harry took over it was seen by many as a short-term appointment of a relegation survival specialist. Lots of fans didn't want Harry and he certainly had no pedigree for good football. The squad we have, imo, is 2nd only to City's in quality. Harry has brought in a few but the vast majority were brought in by Comolli and Levy over the years. Even our best signing during Harry's reign (VDV) is credited to Levy. As far as i'm concerned Harry took the 2nd best squad and finished 4th. Yeah, he did it with style, but i think that is due to the squad. He can't even be credited with assembling the squad. Which of our top players did he bring in? Modders/Bale/VDV/Lennon/Hudd/BAE: nope. Kaboul/Defoe: maybe, but could have been the chairman based on Pompey being unable to pay for them. Parker/Friedel: yes. Adebayor: who knows? Pienaar: maybe, but then wasted him
How long is this myth that Harry is a great man manager going to persist. Tell that to Dos Santos, Pavlyuchenko, Corluka, Bent, Kranjcar, Pienar, Gomes, and so on. It all started with Bent missing a sitter (I am not a fan of Bent btw) Harry's PUBLIC response my Sandra could have scored that. Good man management? Your havin' a laugh. Good to his favourites, sure, but the rest were frozen out and often criticised publicly, that is very poor management. Very poor indeed.
I wouldn't say we had the 2nd best squad at all. It was clearly inbalanced which is something Levy and 'Arry both needed to take responsibility for.
Just not true though is it Luke. RDM & MON this last season to name two. Both came in and produced instant results. Your set of circumstances may happen but equally they may not. Those that supported Redknapp are coming up with all these gloomy scenarios because they think we should have kept him. I don't know what will happen, which way it will go but I am glad that Motor Mouth has gone whatever happens.
