he should pay up. I've said it before on here but i think we missed out with Cahill. Yeah, he was asking silly money in january but we could've had him last summer if we'd stumped up the cash. What could have strengthened us actually strengthened chelsea and look how that panned out for us!
pretty much said exactly the same thing in another post the other day Spurfect. we decided to say "no" for the sake of a couple of mill, and Cahill has gone onto be superb for Chelsea ever since Jan. hopefully levy won't make the same mistake on any player this summer!
Cant we give Ajax Khumalo or Bassong to grease the wheels a bit, we need to get this deal done and give everybody a much needed lift.
I think Khumalo was signed to keep the reciprocal deal with Supersports going- and I think the 1 mill didn't hurt.
Talks in Ajax were positive, with Vertonghen reiterating he only wants to join us. £10m was mentioned, that'd be a great deal for an excellent CB.

Vertonghen told Goal.com on Thursday night that he is in limbo while Spurs chairman Daniel Levy continues to negotiate a fee with Ajax. “I’m just waiting for it to be done,” said Vertonghen. “I understand the situation and I have to be patient. I am not at the Euros but I hope it will be done soon after. “There are still other clubs interested but I will wait. Tottenham is an amazing club and are the team I like to join the most.” * “Does it matter that Tottenham are in the Europa League? No, not that much. You don’t just join for one season" - Jan Vertonghen The Belgian centre-back has already agreed personal terms with Spurs after a trip to London in which he was shown around the club’s new training centre in Enfield and was a guest at their last match of the season, a 2-0 home win over Fulham. However, the transfer has hit a snag over the Dutch club’s £12.1 million asking price, with Tottenham unwilling to offer more than £9.6m for the defender who has just a year remaining on his contract. “I am not aware if Ajax are asking too much or not,” added Vertonghen. “I don’t know what they are asking. I am not part of the negotiation. “Mr Levy was in Amsterdam on Monday and is talking to Ajax and my manager. When they have an agreement they will let me know and I can move.” The 25-year-old, who was named Eredivisie Player of the Year for his contribution to Ajax’s title triumph, says his desire to move to White Hart Lane has not been changed by events in Munich on Saturday night, when Chelsea’s Champions League triumph relegated Spurs to the Europa League next season. “Does it matter that Tottenham are in the Europa League? No, not that much,” said Vertonghen. “You don’t just join for one season.” Spurs made an official move for the Belgian at the start of this month, having failed with an attempt to sign him in January. Vertonghen has chosen Spurs as his preferred destination ahead of other suitors, including Arsenal and Newcastle United. The centre-back is preparing to captain Belgium in a friendly against Montenegro on Friday night and will then make the trip to Wembley to face England in a friendly eight days later. I don't understand what you mean? I've cut and pasted the article from Goal.com. He's quoted as saying that it's Spurs he definitely wants to join, and that he's prepared to wait. He's not worried about lack of CL football this year, as he says " I'm not joining for one year"
Really hope this gets tied up soon. Vertonghen and Kaboul could be awsome. With Dawson, Coulker as back up, and King/Gallas for Europa.
If this is the kick up the backside Levy needs, good - £12m for an defender who is clearly top quality, and has experience in European football, is a good deal. It's not like we're paying £22m for Joleon Lescott.
BBC gossip says 9.6m. That is a steal compared to the money we spent with Commoli on "talent" like bent, bentley, taraabt etc, or ricardo rocha, Ramon vega!
Vertonghen: £12.1m Ramon Vega: £3.75m I think we can agree that Vertonghen is more than three times the defender Vega ever was!
Vega was cool. He had that claw, that mask and that curly hair. Actually, i might be mixing up my Vegas here. I seriousness though, i thought Vega was a decent player. Or was the Popescu? One of them was ok i'm sure of it. Could play defensive midfield too.
Popescu - forever cherished by Spurs fans for scoring the winning penalty in the 2000 UEFA Cup final against That Lot From Down The Road. Back to Vertonghen - anyone else worried that, with us offering £9.6m and Ajax hoping for £12.1m, our next bid will be £10.85m?
That would make my value about £2m though, Croydon! You're definitely thinking of Popescu, Spurfectionist. He was an exceptional defender, just not while he was at Spurs. Our dire tactics didn't help him one bit, though. Still, he scored the winning penalty in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup final between Galatasaray and Arsenal, so it worked out well in the end!
