How many bottles do you reckon HIAG has gone through?

I'm confident had we not had the amount of fixtures we did that we would've made 4th spot. Awful article though, good find.

I think one of the responses knocked the nail on the head for me when he said that the only reason the PL HAS 4 qualifying spots still is because of the large number of coefficient points it has, most of which have been earnt by Chelsea and Man Utd (with both teams having reached two finals, each winning one and regularly making the quarters and semis in the last 6 years).

In fact were it not for Chelseas achievement in winning the Champions League, the PL may have even slipped out of the top 3 leagues due to the dire performances of the Manchester clubs in the group stages and in the Europa League this season. So the rest of the league should kiss our hairy A hole that we managed to pull back some points for our country, or there might not have been a top 4 next year, might have been a top 3!
 
There was always going to be 4 places next year Bodanki but the season after would've been a different matter. I pointed out on another thread theses other tossers should be grateful but half of them can't see beyond their wart infested noses!

Does it take 2 years for the scores to change the placings then? I thought it affected the following season ie next season only the top 3 Prem places would get a CL spot for 2014?

I posted to that effect on the Surs board very late last night and it ddn't go down too well tbh.

I can understand rivalry and that can manifest in ugly ways but to completely deny or ignore facts is imbecilic.

The fact is is that Spuds fans think we have robbed them of their CL place. Truth is 4th place is only available if a team in the same league who does not finish in the top 4 doesn't win the CL.

Simples really but they can't seem to grasp that.

Truth is they lost their CL place when they wobbled like girls during the final run in - as in all walks of life looking inwards and facing up to inadequacies is sometimes difficult - and apart from one or two exceptions the guys on the Spurs board seem incapable of constructive introspection.
 
We certainly didn't do the coefficient any harm by getting to the quarter finals in our only recent entry and it certainly helps our chance of qualifying in future years if we have four places. And you are right about the rule - but it is still really tough on the 4th placed finisher I feel. Might be better in future if there was a play-off between 3rd and 4th in these circumstances, although no doubt in that case we would have managed to come third and lost the play-off.

We should certainly have got more points over the season and qualified by being third - can't argue with that. But I've never understood why it is considered good to start badly and finish strongly and somehow bad to do the opposite. There are all sorts of reasons why good and bad results can come in bursts and having watched most of the matches the difference betrween the first half and last half of the season was more down to good luck before Christmas and bad luck after than any other factor.

Interesting point.

However I feel if you finish 3rd you don't deserve to be battling out with 4th. If your going to do that you might as well throw 2nd in the mix as well and give them a bye to the final and then a playoff between the two losers for the final spot.

Don't feel you'd have beaten Arsenal though on current form, or United or City or even Chelsea as proved.

Probably true on current form but iif it's a one off game anything could happen.

I am not a fan of play offs and I don't think its right that a team in 6th can get promoted ahead of 3rd in the lower divisions

Not a fan of play-offs here; you finish where you finish and that's it in my book.

Tbh I do feel a sorry for all you Spurs fans as it is tough when you get a knock back - and christ knows we've had a few along the way too.

I rather like watching Spurs play when they are firing on all six - much the same as when we turn it on.

I have been a bit knocked back by some of the bitterness from the Spurs fanbase re our win though. I only know 3 Spurs supporters and 2 were very uncharitable and 1 was so-so.

On the other hands MUFC/City/Liverpool fans who I know (11 in total) were all really happy we won - I even had one die-hard 'pool fan (signed Tommy Smith photo's all over his office) tell me he was jumping up and down and shouting for us during the pen's!

Ultimately I think this is the situation:

Spurs feel robbed - that's dumb. To be robbed you need to have had something in the first place. In any year 4th spot is tenuous until the last English team goes out. Something to get over I think.

Spurs are a decent team - they are not top table in the Prem' and are not a real challenge in Europe - one ok run in the CL does not count for too much. They had an ok season in the Prem' and pretty good by their standards. But, if you are seriously getting excited about 69 points then I am worried for you guys. We came in 5 points behind you and that is a fricken embarrassment in my view. In truth you were only in 4th spot by virtue of our crap season - but, nonethelesss, I have to concede you were better in the league than us this year.

Chelsea are also a decent team, in fact a very good team; one of the 2 Prem' powerhouses in Europe over the last decade and there or thereabouts domestically. Again I concede that MUFC are the standout team since '99 for sure although we run them pretty close.

Chelsea have paid their dues in the CL and have had to endure some awful decisions (a few have gone our way granted) but we have been in there season after season battling away. Regardless of what anyone's views are of Chelsea they are real battlers both over the long-haul and during individual games - MUFC are the same and Liverpool used to be the same. I just do not have Spurs in that camp - why this is so I do not know.

At the end of the day, we deserved to get our hands on Big Ears one way or another. We put in the long-haul graft and it paid off.

Should Spurs be in the CL next year? Nope the rules are the rules. If they had come in 4th with 85 points you might feel that it was a harsh rule. But ultimately 69 points is no great shakes and if we had not had the fool AVB at the helm for a good chunk of the season then I feel that even 4th spot would've been out of sight for Spurs.

I hope Spurs do well - I like to see all London teams do well but at the moment you waren't robbed and maybe you need to just get stuck in with some more graft - in football as in life you tend to make your own success.

Actually, as luck and refereeing decisions always play a part even over a season, I think a difference of two points or less is probably not a significant advantage, so it actually makes sense to have play offs, but only between teams that are close on points, not just places.
