To all those who are or have said, Stoke would never beat Barcelona... read on.

End of season 15th May 1969 Barcca vs Stoke City

European Cup winners hosted Stoke City in front of 65,000 fans at the Camp Nou!

Stoke took a THREE goal LEAD yes, we've actually Scored 3 goals AWAY to Barca then, the current Cup holders.

Two goals from David Herd and a third from Harry Burrows gave City a LEAD of three goals at half time. Barca roared back 2nd half but STOKE CITY won the game. YES won it 3 goals to 2.

Who was it who said, we would NEVER play Barcca and even beat them. Don't believe me? Take a look at the Prog v Bolton last game.

Oh Yes we have! Beaten them.

    Thoughts?

1969 was in my heyday as a Stoke fan and I remember David Herd playing for us and Harry Burrows of course but I am buggered if I can remember them playing (never mind beating) Barcelona at their place. Memory not as good as it used to be!!

I do remember Stoke vs Real Madrid at the Vic in 1963 as part of Stoke's centenary celebrations. Result? - was it 2-2?

Although I starting attending games at 8 or 9yrs old, I could/would not remember it. Although, my dad probably took me along with my Uncle. I do however remember Sir Stan's testimonial as though it was yesterday.. Memory does strange things as I do the 72 Final. Seem's like only a few years funny or what? Some games you NEVER forget.

It was an end of season game or Pre Season whichever.. And it was actually a friendly arranged by Barca who invited Stoke City to play them. They did however field their strongest team at the time. Next time I see Harry I will ask him who he can remember from that Stoke team.

(Footnote) Had not seen Harry for some weeks and last week, I found out that Harry has had a re-placement knee. NO WONDER he used to hit a ball/shot so hard, he once burst it during a game! LEGEND!

I well remember Harry, Adrian aka Passtheoatckes has Harry as his postman in Abbots Bromley and sees him from time to time.

I hope Ade to see him during the close season and no doubt talk all things Stoke!

Yes the years do fly by mate..

Funny thing is, I do remember Denis Violet playing for Stoke a few times P.P. But Jimmy Mclroy I don't? Did he retire before DV who was of course one of the SURVIVORS OF the Munich Air Disaster, which I do recall but not that well tbh. I also remember DV came from Utd but year he did P.P. I don't know. Will look that up later.

Potts, Dennis Viollet joined in Jan 62 a day or so before a 3rd round cup-tie vs Blackburn at the Vic. He did not play in that game which we lost 1-0 as I recall (a Bryan Douglas penalty)

Jimmy Mac joined from Burnley in the promotion season !962 - 63 and his debut for Stoke was against Norwich at Carrow Road and Stoke were hammered 6 - 0!! - some debut........... but we still finished as champions.

I started going regularly from when Stan returned in October 1961, had a season ticket for several years during the seventies, after getting fed-up queuing for League Cup and FA Cup tickets from 4 o'clock in the morning in the dark!!!. I moved away from Stoke, as I have said before, in 1985 since when I stopped attending regularly.

Great to read that.. happys days? I think they we're. The only seasons I have not had season tickets since 64 we're the early 80s when we had two young girls.
They at least had to come before Stoke City I missed two seasons and attended even then, at least half the home games. Times we're tough for most around here then if I remember? Me included. I worked in Calgary for six months in 84 missed most games... the other season i didn't buy one was 87.

She is the young lady my youngest who decided to get married last Sept when we played Liverpool, and we WON. That's women for you. <doh>
