The decision is technically correct - swearing is a red card offence and so he should face a ban. But once again it's the 'king inconsistency of the FA. Babel gets a £10,000 fine for improper conduct, Gerrard swears at a ref and gets off scot free, Holloway calls a ref ****ing useless and gets a one match ban.

I bet you anything this is the FA's big gesture to kick start their latest "Respect" campaign which will be forgotten in a few weeks as other players get away with exactly the same thing.

It's only swearing though, people do it after fouls and stuff all the time. I actually feel sorry for Rooney.

Yeah but according to the FA rules they should be sent off for it. Using threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour is a red card offence. But all the referees are encouraged not to ruin the commercial appeal of football by actually enforcing the rules, so the swearing gets out of hand and then something like this happened and they have to "do something".

It's the same as showing dissent to the ref - it should be an instant yellow card offence but the FA never backs up the refs when they try to enforce it except for in obvious cases. And then you wonder why we end up with players following the ref around the pitch whinging and amateur refs being attacked after games.

I`m not bothered as the decision is not final. Rooney still has an appeal and common sense will prevail and all charges will be dropped. When will the fa realise it is a mans game!

The difference is, Rooney swore directly at the camera for no reason. He hadn't been fouled or hurt, there is no excuse for his behavior. He is a fine player but he is a complete moron.

No chance mate. And swearing does not make you a bigger man. Rooney just comes across as immature.

Will we appeal though? Maybe it would be better to get the ban out of the way - I reckon we can beat Fulham (h) and City in the semi-final without Rooney. I wouldn't want him to get his ban extended for a "frivolous appeal" (and I'm sure the FA would have no hesitation about calling it that) and maybe miss the Arsenal league game. Arsenal hate playing Rooney...

Without wishing to sound like i'm having a rant I see this as one more victory for the people who see it as their right to choose to be offended by things that don't fit in to their own narrow minded view of the world. It's such a load of **** and now it allows other actions to be punished on the basis of 'hurting someone's feelings'.

great news for berbatov as he will now start

rooney should be sold. immature disgusting player

Time for you to start hating again is it? He scored a ****ing ( Oh god i should be banned) Hat trick on saturday, but yeah we should transfer list him immediately. Besides it was hardly disgusting. Lots of people swear.

<applause><applause>

well this is just daft, Drogba who shouted 'It's a ****ing disgrace' straight into the camera at then end of a champions league semi final with millions watching, after being sent off (which is an automatic one match ban) and for prodding and shouting, swearing at the ref...

He got a one match ban after appealing, so basically just for getting sent off, no punishment for all the other **** he'd done...
