My one guarded nod in Barton's favour is that his altercation was with Tevez rather than another player with a blemish free profile. Unseen by the officials, Tevez did hit out at Barton, before the red card incident, and then went down like he'd been hit by a caber, on the edge of the area. Clearly, he was trying to provoke the right man and it worked, although he didn't get a bonus penalty, which I'm sure he was trying for. Even Referee Mike Dean looked at the protesting Barton and grimaced as if to say... you've left me with no choice but to send you off.
There are those who would point to Tevez' actions of provocation and be disappointed [I am] and there are those who would ignore them. There are those who would back him for provoking Barton into doing what he did.
There are no excuses for Barton's actions after the red card, and it is regrettable that he lashed out in the first place. But given his temperament what can one expect..? Tevez was actually banking on it.

There lays the crux of the matter. Teams no all about his volatility and act accordingly. He is old enough to have been able to walk away after Tevez did his thing.
He called Gary Lineker an 'odious little toad.' He really is a disgraceful human being. His existence means nothing more than a sack of ****.
And now he's got into a row on twitter with Gary Lineker.
Barton initially said on Twitter that while he would "take it" from Alan Hansen and Lineker, he refused to be criticised by "that bell" Alan Shearer.
The QPR midfielder then rebuffed Lineker's defence of Shearer and his suggestion that Barton was attempting to deflect from "obvious and deserved criticisms".
Lineker then said to Barton: "Still raging then? Still kicking out? And still, presumably, misunderstood? But only by yourself I suspect."
Barton responded: "Do u wanna go there publicly "Mr Squeaky Clean" ? Think u should have a look in that vast closet of skeltons before u respond. (sic)
"I know a lot about THAT side to u the people don't and won't bat an eye lid at exposing u.
"So mind ur manners Squeaky... now back under your stone you odious little toad..."

i'm sure that somewhere in the 6 billion plus world population there must be someone who likes Joey Barton. However, I cannot be bothered to look. A thug behaves in a thuggish manner. This is hardly news. The sooner he is confined to history the better.

Almost wish QPR had got relegated by that result, so as to make clear the causal relationship between his behaviour and failure. The fact they stayed up makes me think that he won't be held too accountable. Unfortunately, though, a new villain will come along soon, and all will be forgotten - everyone will be laughing at that clip in a few years, saying what a character he was, and he'll be a mainstay in Danny Dyer's Hardest Footballers, and appear on Newsnight forever more.
Yes, agree with that. I reckon it wouldn't have even happened at all if it was played under any other circumstances. Tevez probably wouldn't have needed that gameplan. But for Barton to respond, with his reputation and record, and in a game of such crucial importance, he proved once again he is a complete idiot. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, though, and would have enjoyed watching him attempting to go even more mental on more City players, so don't think I can be too judgmental. Pure entertainment, mainlined. Would of course hate it if he was a Saints player. Reckon he'll go to West Ham now - Big Sam would love him there!
The only sensible things he ever says are the criticisms of Alan Shearer's shirts - all of them on MOTD deserve that. Not his hair, though - the guy can't help his hair, nor is Barton in much of a position to point the finger. Hasn't he looked in the mirror lately?
Shearer, along with Le Tissier, are amongst the biggest legends in PL history, and both Saints products. I'm proud of that.
ive seen worse incedents playing in junoir football. everyone knows pro players hit the deck like a sack of sh*t after minimal contact anyways. they wound him up, a man with serious anger problems, and he snapped, he obviously needs help to keep calm, pretty unjust critacism for him being 'a terrible human' i know plenty of people who have whacked someone after being subjected to 'comments' from others, doesnt make them c*nts who should be fired from their jobs...get a grip he's just an angry man. That being said, i would never like to see him in a saints shirt, controversy like that just aint saintly.
I don't think so because it is impossible that a player like him would be getting on the bus. Pardew did some great business in the transfer window and the best one was probably selling Barton. £70,000 a week, 3 years left on his contract. And no relegation clausehow the hell are they gonna get rid of him. Particularly because he won't be available for the first ten games.
Imagine having a job where by attacking someone in your office, you got suspended for ten weeks, and got to sit around at home, getting paid £700,000 over the period! I'd be kneeing colleagues in the back left, right, and centre, day in and day out!
Part of being a manager is tackling issues like this I suppose. A good manager would try and reform him rather than try and offload him. Obviously a good manager wouldn't sign him in the first place, but now that he's there, on a long and expensive contract, they should be trying to help him improve his temperament.
