YOHAN Cabaye apologised for "out of character" scuffle with Tim Cahill which resulted in the Everton man being shown a red card.


But the France midfielder departed Tyneside after a successful first season full of praise for the supporters who have helped carry them into their best finish for eight years.

Cabaye was grabbed by the throat by Cahill after the final whistle but admitted he had spoken out of turn to the Everton man. “I would like to apologise for the cross words I exchanged with Tim Cahill which resulted in his red card and my booking on the final whistle,” he said in a club statement.

“It was unnecessary and, regrettably, the result of frustration and disappointment, all in the heat of the moment. It is out of character and for that I am sorry.

“We have had a fantastic season at Newcastle United and already I look forward to next season, the Premier League and the Europa League. Finally, a huge thank you to our fans who have been magnificent all season.”

Depends what he actually said? remember Zidane's headbutt after the Italian player said something along the lines that his mother was a whore.

I wouldn't apologise for that, its all just gamesmanship. Especially mother quips, they're as old as the hills. You're better off just coming back with a sharp response if someone says that kind of personal stuff. Like when Glenn McGrath was trying to mentally grind the zimbawean batsman Ed Brand by keep asking why he was so fat after every ball. His response? "Because everytime I **** your missus, she gives me a biscuit. Thats a lot of biscuits" Cue McGrath in seething rage unable to bowl properly!

It happens. I suppose there would be certain things which would be unacceptable but not many.

He probably just put his fingers under Cahill's nose and said "Recognise this smell kanga?" Tim probably thought "Yes I do, that's my wife you bastard gallic lethario!!!"

There's banter, there's gamemanship and then there are some things that shouldn't be said. Cabaye thought he had strayed into the last category and has done what anyone who has crossed a line should do. Good on him.

I'm not sure whether any of the other posters are suggesting that players are entitled to say anything to each other these days, no matter how foul. If so, I disagree and hope most other peope do as well.

No I don't agree, take the piss and wind people up. But don't cross the line. Barton taunt Karl Henry that he was on £80K a week pathetic but funny.
Bit like the protest against Steve Kean and the Venky's, they had every right to protest but some of the stuff aimed at Steve Kean was vile and unacceptable. Even throwing a tennis ball at him with 'Kean Out' written on it was a bit much if it had hit him.

Cabaye has acknowledge he crossed the line and apologies so credit where it is due.

Not at all Fredd but the point is we don't know what was said. But comments used to wind each other up about mothers etc are part and parcel of football. If folk don't like that they'll either need to man up or find another sport to play. Its been going on since football began and won't change. Anyone who has played any level of football knows this goes on.

I think there probably are some things that cross the line (I wouldn't say its ok to make reference to Muamba's heart attack should he ever return to the field for instance) Professional sport and sport in general is a cruel and mental battle at times.

Mate at work is an Evertonian and what apparently happened is the ball went out for an NUFC thrown in. Cabaye went over took the ball off the ball boy and pushed him back (Shoved him) for no real reason and that's why Cahill went off it.

Just had a mackem mate asking if he'll get done for 'punching' the ball boy' I'm sure if he'd done that the press would have been all over it. FAIL

Aye, I watched the game and the ball boy was taking the piss not giving him the ball quick enough so Cabaye went over grabbed the ball and the kid fell backwards a bit onto his seat, Cabaye went over to the lad at half time and spoke to him and gave him a cuddle (lucky bastard), think it was just a mistake in his anticipation to get the ball back in play, nowt in it really.

He didn't say what time it happened, if it happened in the first 10 mins and he apologiesed like TWD said then doubt he would have done it again. Maybe they had words about it again at the end, who knows.

I reckon there must have been something inbetween. Why would Cabaye apologise when he had already apologised at half time to the lad? Surely Cahill would have just waited in the tunnel at half time if he was that incensed? Perhaps its because it relates to the ball boy that Cabaye feels the need to apologise. Just pure specultion here but maybe Cahill made reference to it when he came on and Cabaye has called him something unsavoury.

It just seems strange that Cabaye would feel the need to apologise for something said on the field of play. Perhaps he feels he caused the incident with his poor behaviour to the young lad.

There are very few things that are unacceptable in terms of players making comments to each other or trying to wind each other up. You'd have to be crossing some pretty dodgy lines, I'm not sure Cabaye is the type for that. Sure I could see him making reference to a mother or such like, but nothing too bad.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is the type for that - He's shown throughout this season he's got a nasty side to him.
